Washington Redskins wide receiver Terry McLaurin

Week 6 Prescription Notes

Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore— It was good to see Panthers QB Kyle Allen finally throw effectively to his wide receivers. Both D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel have struggled in recent weeks, but against Tampa, Moore had seven receptions, and Samuel had four receptions (and two TDs). If Allen can continue hitting his receivers it will take the pressure off RB Christian McCaffrey having to carry the team each week.

— Things are looking up once again in Minnesota as QB Kirk Cousins threw for 333 yards and four TDs against the Eagles. This performance was the second week in a row that the Vikings aired it out on offense, and it was the second week in a row that they were successful. The key to the Vikings making the playoffs will be for them to continue to throw the ball even when Cousins is not playing his best.

— There have been rumors that the Bengals are open to trading star WR A.J. Green, but I think that would be a huge mistake. The real problem (besides one of the worst offensive lines in the league) is QB Andy Dalton. I am not sure what they can get for him in a deal, but at 0-6, it’s time to see if Rookie Ryan Finley has a future with the team. At this point the Bengals might be “Tanking for Tua” so there is no point to starting Dalton each week.

— Is there any player more valuable to his team than Seahawks QB Russell Wilson? Once again, Wilson led the Seahawks back from an early deficit and showed why he is arguably the best QB not named Patrick Mahomes. Moving forward, the Seahawks will have to find a replacement for TE Will Dissly, who is out for the season with a torn Achilles. Luckily, Wilson has a cadre of receivers who can get open and make plays when needed.

— The MVP of the New Orleans Saints might just be their defense. Once again, the Saints defense dominated the game and held Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew to 163 passing yards. Right now, the Saints look like the most balanced team in the league, and they are doing it without QB Drew Brees.

— If you listened to me on the FNTSY radio last week I mentioned that you would be able to tell who won the Texans/Chiefs game by looking at RB Carlos Hyde‘s stat line in the box score. I said on air that if Hyde ran for more than 80 yards rushing the Texans would win. Well, Hyde ran for 116 yards and a TD. The Chiefs were better on offense with WR Tyreek Hill back, but without a run defense, the Chiefs are in big trouble this season.

Washington Redskins RB Adrian Peterson

— Please, no more questions about whether to start Redskins WR Terry McLaurin. He is a must start each week regardless of who the Redskins play. As for Adrian Peterson, he is only worth starting on a week to week basis. This was a great game for him, but he won’t face the awful Dolphins run defense each week.

— Tell me the team who looks better than the San Francisco 49ers right now except maybe the New England Patriots. The 49ers completely dominated the Rams in every facet of the game, holding Jared Goff to 78 yards passing. 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan is doing a great job of play calling, and Jimmy Garoppolo should have had a TD if Tevin Coleman could catch. As for the Rams, I am not sure why they decided to run the ball as much as they did considering the 49ers have the top run defense in the league. The Rams game plan was horrific, and I am not sure why they didn’t make any halftime adjustments.

— Congratulations to the Arizona Cardinals for finally converting field goals into touchdowns. Although they played the pathetic Falcons defense, QB Kyler Murray is gaining confidence each week and is looking like a real fantasy superstar. The interesting thing is that they have been doing this without WR Christian Kirk. Kirk is due back next week, so it will be fun watching the Air Raid offense continue to gel with all their weapons back.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill

— Just. Play. Ryan Tannehill. That is what the Titans need to do moving forward. QB Marcus Mariota threw for 63 yards and two INTs before he was removed from the game. I am not sure that Tannehill is that much better, but he deserves to be named the starter and have a good week of practice so the team can determine whether he is the right man for the job. Sadly, Mariota is not.

— Wow!!! I was blown away by how well the Jets played against the Cowboys. QB Sam Darnold finally returned after his absence with mono and immediately found WRs Robby Anderson and Jamison Crowder for big plays. Hopefully, TE Chris Herndon can return soon from his hamstring injury so we can see the full Jets offense at work. There is still defensive improvement needed. At least there is hope with the Jets’ offense.

— I was incredibly impressed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on both sides of the ball. QB Devlin Hodges avoided trouble, and RB James Conner finally asserted himself as the stud RB we know him to be. Even more impressive than the offense, though, was their defense who stifled Philip Rivers all game long. Moreover, the Steelers defense really neutralized the Chargers running game from the onset of the game which totally changed the outcome.
