The Tyreek Hill Controversy (and when is the best time to draft)

After an investigation that lasted four months (but seemed much longer) the NFL ruled today that there was insufficient evidence to prove that Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill violated the league’s conduct policy. Hill has been approved to return to the team and will be present when training camp opens in less than a week.

There is a lot of doubt surrounding this case and many people are very upset as it involved the abuse of a young child. I concur with the severity of the case, but from the onset this was a real mess of “he said, she said” by all the parties involved. I do feel certain, however, that the NFL investigated this fully and was prepared to suspend Hill for a number of games if they were able to find any evidence that connected him to the incident. We can only hope that this incident shows Hill a better path to live his life if he wants to be a good father and continue his career as a professional athlete.

For those Fantasy Football players who have drafted already, there is a great chance that Hill was drafted somewhere between rounds four and seven based on his expected suspension that most experts thought for sure that he would receive. Because of the mixed stories that was coming out of the two camps (Hill and his fiancé), I thought that he would see no more than a two to three game suspension. Not only did I take Hill in one of the two early drafts that I participated in, I encouraged other Fantasy owners to select him as he provided amazing value in early drafts.

Playffwc.com has drafts that begin in June and go until the opening kickoff of the season. Many people are reluctant to draft early as they fear injuries and potential cuts that could happen in training camp. I would agree with this assessment, but at the same time I cannot express how much value is available for those Fantasy Football owners who are willing to draft early. It is conceivable that someone who drafted last night might have taken Rams RB Todd Gurley in Round 2, Chargers RB Melvin Gordon in Round 3, and Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill in Round 4. A team like this might end up winning a high stakes league!

Someone made a comment on twitter today that if experts could only participate in one draft that they would want the draft to be as close to the season as possible. I disagree with this statement. While it is always good to have the latest and greatest information available to us before we draft, one of the things that I believe sets me apart is my ability to see things before they happen (Roto Visionary 😊 I would much prefer to draft towards the end of August where I can take a few chances and see if my hunches play out which will give me a better chance of getting value at my draft—and potentially winning my league.
