2019 NFL Season Fantasy Stream of Consciousness (“D—J”)

Part 1 | Part 2

Dallas Cowboys

How has head coach Jason Garrett not been fired yet? (Update: Garrett is no longer the Cowboys’ head coach.) QB Dak Prescott played well for the most part, but there is no way that he’s worth $40 million per year. Fantasy-wise he improved significantly, but Fantasy teams still need a quality backup if he is their starter. RB Ezekiel Elliott is a top-five overall fantasy player. WR Amari Cooper needs to improve his home/road splits, but WR Michael Gallup has the makings of a potential star. He dropped too many passes, but there is tremendous upside with him. I like him as a WR2 in 2020. TE Blake Jarwin seems to have some ability but needs more snaps. This team needs an overhaul at the top of the coaching staff to make it more appealing.

Denver Broncos

QB Drew Lock’s numbers might not have been that impressive, but he looked confident in the pocket, and the game was not too fast for him. RB Phillip Lindsay is still an effective runner, but RB Royce Freeman is nothing more than a BYE week fill-in. WR Courtland Sutton can be one of the great wide receivers in the game. His ceiling depends on Lock’s progression, which is the only drawback. WRs DaeSean Hamilton and Tim Patrick flashed at times, but more consistency is needed. TE Noah Fant has the look of a future star and is someone fantasy owners should be targeting next season.

Detroit Lions

QB Matt Stafford’s injury was a huge setback so he could be undervalued next season. RB Kerryon Johnson flashed for a second time but showed an inability to stay healthy. He has second-round talent, but if he’s not on the field, then it could end up being a lousy pick once again. WR Kenny Golladay is a rock-solid WR1, and it looks like he hasn’t yet hit his ceiling. WR Marvin Jones is better than I think, and I need to move him up my draft boards. WR Danny Amendola‘s success appears to be game dependent. TE T.J. Hockenson was overrated as a rookie, but it normally takes tight ends three years to develop.

Packers QB Aaron RodgersGreen Bay Packers

QB Aaron Rodgers led the team to the #2 seed in the NFC, yet his Fantasy numbers were mediocre. He has the name, but does he still have the “game?” RB Aaron Jones was nothing short of sensational in 2019. However, if he goes in Round 1 in 2020 are Fantasy owners chasing last year’s points? WR Davante Adams will slide to the second round in drafts, but that would be a mistake. When healthy, he is a top 10 overall player. WR Allen Lazard will emerge into a nice WR2 for the Packers and could be a WR3 for fantasy owners next season. TE Jimmy Graham looks like his career is on the downward spiral.

Houston Texans

Can the Texans continue to overhaul their offensive line to give QB Deshaun Watson more time to throw? Watson let his Fantasy owners down in Week 16 this season, which could drop him ever so slightly next season. RB Carlos Hyde performed better than expected, but he is not the long-term answer. RB Duke Johnson could have been used more as a runner. It may be unfair to say that WR DeAndre Hopkins had a disappointing season, but he did not return #4 overall pick value. He’s still great, but maybe he’s more like pick 9-11. WR Will Fuller needs to stay healthy to be a star. TE Darren Fells saw his playing time decrease significantly when Jordan Akins returned to the lineup. Neither player is fantasy relevant so long as they are sharing snaps.

Indianapolis Colts

QB Jacoby Brissett seemed to get worse as the year went on. He suffered mostly due to crazy amounts of injuries to his starters, but even still, he was inaccurate and looked confused reading difficult pass coverages. RB Marlon Mack is a huge part of the offense and should be no less than a fourth round pick. RB Nyheim Hines needs to see the football more. WR TY Hilton was injured for much of the season, but regardless it looks like he is no longer a second-round value. WR Parris Campbell needs a mulligan to restart his career. WR Devin Funchess will be playing elsewhere in 2020. WR Zach Pascal flashed at points but was generally ignored when Hilton was playing. TE Eric Ebron will not return to the team next season. He was overrated based on 2018’s numbers. TE Jack Doyle is a great player to own at a tough position, but he always seems to miss a few games each season due to injury.

Jacksonville Jaguars

It seems crazy considering how bad he’s been, but Head Coach Doug Marrone appears to have kept his job for one more season. QB Nick Foles was one of the worst free-agent signings in NFL history. QB Gardner Minshew showed more than Foles and cost the team $82 million less. RB Leonard Fournette rebounded nicely from a poor 2018 and had a comeback season. He still did not score nearly enough, but that might have been more team-related than player-related. RB Ryquell Armstead is a reliable backup and someone I am happy to roster late in drafts in case of a Fournette injury. WR Dede Westbrook was a major bust. He does have talent, but for now, he appears to have fallen on the team’s depth chart. WR D.J. Chark was a steal in 2019. Had he not gotten injured late in the season, he easily could have had double-digit TDs. WR Chris Conley was undervalued and performed well, especially when given a chance to start. TE Josh Oliver was injured for much (if not all) of the season, so he will have to prove that he has the goods to be a starter next year in training camp.
