Week 12 Weekend Roundup – Paul Goldschmidt’s Summer Reawakening

Paul Goldschmidt was off to a dreadful start, but in June, the Goldschmidt of recent seasons has appeared. He went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, walk, two runs and two RBIs Sunday. He hit a pair of homers Saturday and finished the three-game slate at Coors Field 8-for-13 with two doubles, a triple, four home runs and nine RBIs. In June, he is batting .500 with 12 runs, five home runs, and 12 RBIs. He is batting .254 with 43 runs, 12 home runs and 31 RBIs.

Stephen Strasburg is on the DL with right shoulder inflammation, and there’s no timetable for his return.

The Yankees placed Masahiro Tanaka on the DL with tightness in both hamstrings and will miss multiple weeks.

Jon Lester threw seven scoreless innings and allowed one hit, two walks and struck out five. He is 7-2 with a 2.22 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 13 starts.

Rhys Hoskins was activated from the DL Saturday and hit a three-run homer. He went 0-for-3 Sunday with two RBIs.

The Phillies bullpen still doesn’t have a clear closer. Seranthony Dominguez pitched the seventh and eighth innings and struck out four allowing three hits and one run. He’s the one to own. Luis Garcia started the ninth and allowed two hits and Tommy Hunter came in to get the final out and save.

Adam Eaton returned from the DL and went 1-for-4 with two runs on Saturday and wasn’t in the lineup Sunday as they ease him back in.

Hector Rondon has picked up the last three saves for the Astros. He allowed a hit and a walk Saturday before inducing a double play to lock up a 4-3 win over the Rangers. Manager A.J. Hinch said Ken Giles had some shaky outings lately and he along with Rondon and possibly others will get opportunities. Rondon then struck out the side Sunday for another save. He has a 1.50 ERA and a 29:5 K:BB ratio in 24 innings. He should be added in all leagues.

Blake Treinen recorded five outs to get a win Sunday.

Zack Godley has been struggling, and then he has a good game at Coors Field. He went 5.2 innings and allowed five hits, two walks, two earned runs and struck out eight in a win.

Carlos Martinez struggled in his second start off the DL. He went 3.2 innings and allowed four runs, seven walks, four hits and struck out five. He didn’t look sharp in either start.

Joakim Soria has regained the job as White Sox closer. He picked up his fifth straight save in a win over the Red Sox with a scoreless inning.

Reynaldo Lopez allowed one earned run in 6.1 innings to beat the Red Sox.

Curtis Granderson went 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles and six RBIs Sunday.

Anthony Swarzak pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get a save for the Mets in a 2-0 win over the Yankees Sunday night. Robert Gsellman pitched the seven and eighth innings. Both could be in the mix for saves while Jeurys Familia is out with Swarzak with the edge.

Seth Lugo pitched six scoreless innings and allowed two hits, no walks and struck out eight in a win against the Yankees.

Ross Stripling picked up another win, beating the Braves by going 6.2 innings and allowing four hits, two runs, no walks and six strikeouts. He has a 5-0 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over his last five starts.

Corey Kluber went eight innings and allowed two runs, no walks, five hits and struck out eight in a win over the Tigers. He is 10-2 with a 1.99 ERA and 0.83 WHIP.

C.J. Cron hit his 15th homer Sunday.

Edwin Diaz pitched a scoreless inning to pick up his 23rd save.

James Paxton struck out ten over seven innings and allowed no walks and three runs. He has a 3.02 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 111:25 K:BB ratio in 89.1 innings.

Charlie Morton struggled on Saturday, walking six and hitting four batters and allowed one hit and one earned run in 3.2 innings.

Dallas Keuchel had an ugly line Sunday, allowing 13 hits and five earned runs in 4.1 innings at Texas. He has a 4.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP.

Max Muncy continues to flash power, hitting his 11th homer and walked three times Saturday. He went 1-for-2 with two walks and 12th homer the next day.

Brandon Crawford went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and both RBIs in the Giants’ 2-0 win over the Nationals Sunday.

Trevor Story went 3-for-4 with a pair of two-run homers Saturday and has 14 home runs and 47 RBIs.

Aroldis Chapman picked up his 17th save Saturday.

Jeimer Candelario hit a walk-off two-run homer in the 12th inning Saturday and has 10 home runs and 29 RBIs in 205 at-bats.

Tyler Skaggs allowed one run and struck out eight with five hits and one walk to get a win over the Twins.

Arodys Vizcaino picked up save No. 11 Saturday and has a 2.10 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 25.2 innings.

Quietly, Anibal Sanchez is pitching well for the Braves. He allowed two earned runs, three hits, two walks and struck out five in 5.1 innings in a win to improve to 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA.

Michael Wacha improved to 8-1, allowing two runs, four hits, walked three and struck out six. He has a 2.47 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 67:30 K:BB ratio in 76.2 innings.

Jordan Hicks struck out the side to get his first save of his career for the Cardinals Saturday.

After J.D. Martinez sat out with back spasms Friday, Martinez returned to the lineup Saturday and went 2-for-4 with his 21st homer.

The disappointing season continues for Luis Castillo. He struck out ten but allowed four hits and five runs. He has a 5.79 ERA and 1.42 WHIP.

Craig Kimbrel picked up save No. 20 on Saturday.

Kirby Yates picked up a save Saturday. Brad Hand pitched the eighth inning against the heart of the order, including left-hander Justin Bour. On Sunday, Yates pitched the eighth and Hand the ninth for his  19th save. Hand will get most of the saves, but he will be used earlier in the ninth against tough hitters or left-handers.

Clayton Richard pitched seven innings and allowed two hits, three walks, one run and struck out five.

Carlos Rodon made his season debut against the Red Sox Saturday and allowed four runs – two earned – six hits, two walks and struck out seven in five innings.

Kelvin Herrera keeps enhancing his trade value, picking up save 14 on Saturday. He has a 0.73 ERA in 26 games and has blown one save.

Danny Duffy struck out ten in seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks against the A’s. He is 3-6 with a 5.28 ERA and 1.54 WHIP.

Eric Thames is expected to be activated Monday.

Carlos Correa sat out his fourth straight game Sunday with discomfort in his right side. An MRI showed no structural damage. Correa hopes to return Tuesday.

The Pirates sent Nick Kingham to Triple-A with Ivan Nova returning from the DL. Nova threw 5.2 innings and allowed one run, four hits, two walks and struck out eight.

The top prospect in baseball Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has a strained patellar tendon in his left knee and will be re-evaluated in four weeks.

Brandon Belt will take some swings at the Giants spring training facility Monday. He hopes to return June 15 as he works his way back from an appendectomy.

Yoenis Cespedes left a rehab game on Saturday with quad tightness and sat out Sunday. He will head back to Florida to restart his rehab program.

Max Soroka will be activated from the DL and start Wednesday.

Zach Britton will be activated from the DL on Monday.

Jorge Soler sat out Saturday and Sunday with a bruised toe and is expected to play Tuesday.

Justin Turner missed the weekend with a sore wrist and is expected to return Tuesday.

Jung Ho Kang was promoted to Triple-A Sunday. He batted .417 with three home runs at High-Bradenton in seven games.

The Brewers acquired Brad Miller and cash from the Rays for Ji-Man Choi.

Shelby Miller allowed eight runs on nine hits in three innings in a Double-A rehab start.

Asdrubal Cabrera left Sunday’s night game with a tight left hamstring.
