More than ever, most people wait on drafting quarterbacks. It might not be the case in home leagues, but in the Fantasy Football World Championships, drafters wait to draft quarterbacks. Since the FFWC drafts are 20 rounds, it makes sense to draft a second quarterback. In leagues with 16 rounds, I don’t think it’s necessary. The quarterback position is deeper than ever and there are a few veteran and young quarterbacks going late that are solid targets as a backup quarterback.
5 Quarterbacks to Target Late
Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
The setup isn’t much better for the young QB, who started one game last season. He has a running back in Kareem Hunt that led the league in rushing last season, an elite tight end in Travis Kelce, an explosive receiver in Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins, who has a big ceiling. The Chiefs clearly believe in Mahomes, trading up to the 10th pick to acquire him last season and trading Alex Smith coming off his best season. Mahomes has a great arm, weapons and a bad defense.
Marcus Mariota, Tennessee Titans
Mariota has a lot to prove. He’s coming off an awful season and was bothered by a hamstring injury. He was consistently drafted in the Top 10 quarterbacks last season and now he’s often going outside the Top 15. The coaching staff under Mike Mularkey didn’t help. Matt LaFleur is the new offensive coordinator and has learned under Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay. Mariota had a 2.9 percent touchdown rate last season and is heading for positive regression. Since 2016, Mariota is fifth in rushing yards among quarterbacks.
Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons
Ryan had a career year and won the MVP in 2016 and while most knew regression was coming, it came crashing down hard going from 38 touchdowns to 20. Ryan has been a QB1 often in his career and in his second season in the Steve Sarkisian offense and the addition of Calvin Ridley will help Ryan bounce back and the price is very cheap.

Alex Smith, Washington Redskins
Smith finished four at quarterback last season and while he did have a lot of weapons with the Chiefs, he’s going to a system under Jay Gruden that has been favorable for Fantasy quarterbacks. Andy Dalton was a Top 3 quarterback under Gruden and Kirk Cousins has been a QB1 for the last three seasons. There is talent and upside with the wide receivers and in leagues that are high in interception penalties, Smith gets a boost since he protects the football. He hasn’t thrown double-digit interceptions since 2010.

Trubisky enters his second year with a new coaching staff and an influx of weapons. Trubisky wasn’t good last season, but he had one of the worst receiving groups in the NFL and a bad coaching staff. The Bears added Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, drafted Anthony Miller and signed tight end Trey Burton. Matt Nagy is the new coach, coming over from Kansas City where he called the plays at times last season. Even though he’s unproven, he’s an upgrade over John Fox. He can also run, averaging six yards per carry last season. Trubisky is being drafted at the low tier of QB2 range and there is upside.
