Fantasy Baseball: Freddy Peralta DOMINATING Opponents

Senior Fantasy Baseball Expert Adam Ronis discusses Milwaukee Brewers SP Freddy Peralta's recent performances along with Jorge Polanco's looming return from an 80-game suspension.

Milwaukee Brewers SP Freddy Peralta

Dominant Performances From Freddy Peralta

Freddy Peralta was spent one month in the minor leaguers after making two starts in May, including a dominant performance in his debut at Coors Field. Peralta came back to the Brewers and started on June 19.

He pitched six scoreless innings, allowing two hits, no walks and struck out seven against the Pirates. The Brewers had a game postponed the next day on Wednesday and had an off day Monday. The Brewers had a chance to send Peralta back to the minors and that Wednesday night, I had to decide to hold Peralta in my home league.

Talent usually wins out and I elected to hold Peralta. So far, it has worked as the Brewers kept Peralta in the majors and based on results, he shouldn’t go anywhere.

Peralta was dominant in his fourth major league start Tuesday night, pitching seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit, one walk and struck out ten against the Royals. The Brewers have Junior Guerra, Chase Anderson, Jhoulys Chacin and Brent Suter in the other four spots in the starting rotation. Zach Davies is close to returning from the DL and Wade Miley in on a rehab assignment and Jimmy Nelson could be several weeks away.

Some were hesitant to add Brandon Nimmo since it appeared his playing time was limited with a crowded Mets outfield. Yoenis Cespedes has been out longer than expected, but Nimmo showed he deserves to play every day and those that bet on the talent won out.

Teams won’t make the right decision all the time, but sticking with the talent will usually work out. Peralta is no lock to remain with the Brewers, but if he has another good start Sunday against the Reds, how can a team in a pennant race justify sending him down?

Peralta is 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA, 0.71 WHIP, and a 35:9 K:BB ratio in 22.2 innings. He has held batters to a .093 average.

Peralta made one of the most memorable debuts. He went into Coors Field in Colorado as a 21-year old and pitched 5.2 scoreless innings and allowed one hit, walked two and struck out 13. He was added in most leagues and then followed up with six walks, three runs and four hits in four innings against the Twins and was sent back down to the minors.

Polanco Time

Jorge Polanco was one of my favorites mid-round picks in draft season. Then he got suspended in late March for 80 games for violating the league’s drug policy.

The Twins shortstop is almost eligible to return. Polanco can return Monday and is on a rehab assignment. He played his first game Sunday as a DH and didn’t get a hit. Polanco played his first game at shortstop Tuesday at Class A Fort Myers went 2-for-3 with a homer, and two walks.

The league allows suspended players to play in a 15-game minor league assignment, but Polanco’s got pushed back due to an injured right index finger he caught in a door and it became infected.

If Polanco isn’t ready to return to the Twins on Monday, they will put him on the 10-day DL. Either way, he’s close to a return and now is the time to add him. It might be your last shot.

Polanco helped the Twins make the playoffs last season, batting .316 with 42 RBIs in the final 55 games.
