Fantasy Football: Week 8 Start ‘Em & Sit ‘Em

In his Week 8 Start 'Em & Sit 'Em, the former #1 ranked fantasy football player Mark Deming shares his lineup recommendations.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton

START ‘EM

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray

Last week there was a fantasy expert buzz about sitting Bears Allen Robinson against Lattimore. Meanwhile, A-Rob turned in his best game of the year. Sometimes all the stats that fantasy experts report don’t hold water. Don’t fear the Saints defense and start the athletic Murray indoors vs. a Saints team that allows the ninth-most points to fantasy QBs.

Titans QB Ryan Tannehill

If you look at Tannehill’s historical stats, there are more convincing than you would think. Imagine if Tannehill was used correctly? The Titans are allowing Tannehill to focus on the Titans’ big WR corps, and the offense looked more explosive with Tannehill under center. The Bucs have allowed the eighth-most points to fantasy QBs.

Raiders QB Derek Carr

Say what you want about the Raiders, but their offense is more productive than many know. Carr is coming off a road performance where he was 22 0f 28 for 293 and two TDs. The Texans allow the sixth-most fantasy points to QBs, and Vegas over/under is currently 51.5, the highest NFL total of Week 8.

RUNNING BACKS

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon

Lions RB JD McKissic

McKissnic was a hidden gem in Seattle where he showed flashes, and that’s why the Lions pounced when he was cut. If you know Matt Stafford, he’s excellent at checking down to RBs, and the former college WR has excellent hands. NY has allowed the seventh-most points to fantasy RBs.

Chargers RB Melvin Gordon

In theory, Gordon may have taken some bad advice to hold out. He can’t even beat out teammate Austin Ecker as the team’s top RB. This may be a showcase game for Gordon as the NFL trade deadline looms. Don’t fear the Bears too much they surprisingly allow the sixth-most fantasy points to RBs.

Texans RB Carlos Hyde

As mentioned above, the gambling total on this game is the highest of Week 8, so the Raiders and Texans should be coveted fantasy starts this week. This game could be a nice spot for Carlos Hyde. Hyde should be good for 80 yards and one TD vs. Raiders defense is allowing the tenth-most points to fantasy RBs. In a game that could loose as a goose, it should benefit Hyde in the Texan RB rotation.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton

Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald

It’s a slippery slope comparing the data on the Saints Lattimore’s shut-down data vs. the impressive Saints defense has given up the eighth-most fantasy points to WRs. I believe this game will be loose and full of big plays. I like the Fitz playing in the controlled conditions of the dome stadium.

Broncos WR Courtland Sutton

Sutton is one of the most underrated fantasy WRs, and the Broncos decision to trade WR Emmanuel Sanders opens the door even further for Sutton to thrive. The Colts will score, so the Broncos will come prepared to throw. The Colts have allowed the tenth-most points to fantasy WRs. Sutton’s skill set is a bonus.

Seahawks WR DK Metcalf

Playing your fantasy roster vs. the leaky Falcons defense is no secret. After a costly Week 7 fumble vs. the Ravens, I anticipate Metcalf will rebound big-time in Atlanta. Metcalf’s physical size in the indoor stadium is his dream matchup vs. the Falcons’ defense is allowing the 5th most fantasy points to fantasy WRs. The last two games played in the matchup (both in 2017) combined for 65 and 56 points.

TIGHT ENDS

Packers TE Jimmy Graham

Based on where I’ve seen, the veteran TE ranked this week (too low), I’ll advocate getting Graham into your lineups. The Sunday night matchup is the fifth-highest gambling total on the board in Week 8. The Chiefs allow the ninth-most points to fantasy TEs.

SIT ‘EM

QUARTERBACKS

Colts QB Jacoby Brissett

This Colts offense is on the rise and one of the most underrated in the league. That being said, this recommendation is based on the data. Only the undefeated Patriots and 49ers have allowed fewer points to fantasy QBs than the Broncos. Denver has been stingy vs. the pass and allowing just 10.49 fantasy points to opposing QBs per game.

Panthers QB Kyle Allen

Allen is undefeated as the Panthers starter but faces an uphill challenge in the Week 8 road start in San Francisco. The 49ers have allowed a ridiculous 7.06 average to fantasy QBs through entering the matchup vs. the Panthers. This is a tough call because the data will ring true, or Allen may blow up the current QB average by a large margin.

RUNNING BACKS

Titans RB Derrick Henry

Once again, this recommendation is based on data, so double check your RB options with bye weeks. The Bucs have surprisingly allowed 17.4 points to fantasy RBs, the third-lowest total in the NFL, and that’s the most surprising stat I discovered writing the article.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Chargers WR Mike Williams

Philip Rivers’ skills are declining with age. He has the heart of a lion, but age looks to be catching up with him. The Bears pass defense is formidable. They’ve allowed the eighth-fewest points to fantasy WRs.

Panthers WR DJ Moore

Once again, a data play for Moore this week as the 49ers defense is number two overall vs. fantasy WRs allowing just 25.65 points. How much of that is based on the schedule they’ve faced so far is the question? Look into this matchup further before sitting Moore as the Panthers are coming out of a bye week.

TIGHT ENDS

Bucs TE OJ Howard

Until he proves us all wrong, you cannot start Howard this week. With teams contacting Tampa regarding trading for the former first-round pick but the Bucs supposedly declining offers only makes the situation more tense.
