RECEIVING YARDS ALLOWED BY POSITION
This new featured tool displays how each defense performs against their opponent’s receiving yardage gained by position.
So for example, if you see a team is ranked 1st vs. WR #1, that defense is currently the best at limiting their opponent’s WR #1 yardage compared to other teams. Or if you see a team is ranked 32nd against WR #2, that defense is the worst against WR #2’s or more accurately, the defense is allowing the most yards to WR #2’s compared to the other teams in the league. This a great tool to find and exploit useful matchups. Don’t forget to check out all the positions as well (WR #1, WR #2, Other WRs, TE & RB).
Defensive Back News & Notes
Carlton Davis (CB) Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs have officially placed Davis on injured reserve with a quad injury. He had also been hampered with a hamstring injury previously. This is a tough loss for a Bucs secondary that has already arguably been the worst in the NFL this season. This week the Bucs will take on the Miami Dolphins and Richard Sherman could be stepping into a major role. Davis will be eligible to return in Week 8.
Byron Jones (CB) Miami Dolphins
Jones left last week’s game with multiple leg injuries and was replaced by Nik Needham, who was a big step down. Jones is a key piece of this Dolphins secondary, which currently is the only thing this team has going for them. After missing practice early in the week he was able to return to the practice field on Thursday. The hope is he will be able to give it a go this Sunday against the Bucs. His absence would be a big boost to the Tampa wideouts.
Jaire Alexander (CB) Green Bay Packers
Alexander is not expected to play Week 5 after spraining his AC Joint last week. This is a massive boost for the Cincinnati receiving corps, which will be further boosted by the return of Tee Higgins. Alexander is one of, if not the best cover men in the NFL. In a coinciding move to this injury, the Packers signed CB Rasual Douglas off the Cardinals practice squad. It’s very unlikely he plays this week and his status has to be in question for the following week as well. We will monitor practice next week and update you on his status.
Stephone Gilmore (CB) Carolina Panthers
After initially announcing their intentions to cut Gilmore, the New England Patriots were able to find a trade partner and get a sixth-round pick out of the Panthers for the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year. This is a bargain if we’ve ever seen one. However, this will not impact this week’s matchup. He was placed on the PUP list and will have to sit out at least two more games. Moving forward, this could make an already outstanding defense even stronger. This is bad news for fantasy options against the Panthers.
Trayvon Mullen (CB) Las Vegas Raiders
Mullen was forced from last week’s game with a foot injury and was not able to return. As of Thursday, he has not been able to take the practice field this week and is trending toward missing Week 5. He has been a strong option at cornerback this year for the Raiders and this would be a tough loss for their secondary. This would be an upgrade for Allen Robinson, Darnell Mooney, and Justin Fields this week.
Patrick Surtain II (CB) Denver Broncos
Surtain was forced out of last week’s game with a chest injury and was not able to return against the Ravens. He has not suited up for practice this week and his status for Week 5 is up in the air. He has stepped in as the No. 2 corner this year for Denver and has been impactful. If he can’t go, it should be a boost to the Steelers’ WRs corps. Chase Claypool is most likely to benefit the most from his absence.
Jordan Poyer (S) Buffalo Bills
After being forced to miss Week 4 with an ankle injury, Poyer has returned to practice this week in a limited capacity. His injuries are considered day to day and his status is in question for Week 5. However, he is trending in the right direction. He is one of the best safeties in the league and his presence is an upgrade for the entire Bills’ defense.
