NFC South Draft Review (Fantasy offense only)
Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons’ primary objective in this draft was to find protection for QB Matt Ryan. They did that nicely with OG Chris Lindstrom and OT Kaleb McGary.
RB Qadree Ollison—Ollison is a big, bruising back who could take over Tevin Coleman’s role in the offense. Look for him primarily in short yardage situations.
WR Marcus Green—Green profiles as a return man who might be able to stick as the team’s WR5. He’s got excellent speed, but he really needs to be more consistent with his hands before he can become a regular contributor.
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers have drafted so many skill position players recently that they spent most of their picks on this draft shoring up the rest of their team. First-round pick Brian Burns could be a menace as a pass rusher and second round OL Greg Little will help protect Cam Newton.
QB Will Grier—Before the draft there were rumors that Grier might go at the end of the first round, but he fell to round three and will be the backup to Cam Newton. Grier has the potential to stick around the league for years to come as he is blessed with a strong arm and quick release. He also gives the Panthers a chance to win games if Cam is ever out for any length of time with an injury.
RB Jordan Scarlett—Scarlett is a gifted athlete who had a myriad of off-field issues while in college. On the field, he is a strong first- and second-down runner who could push for 5-8 carries a game when Christian McCaffrey needs a rest. However, if Scarlett cannot curtail his immaturity issues, he could end up out of the league within months.
WR Terry Godwin—Godwin will have trouble making the roster unless the Panthers decide to give up on veteran WRs Chris Hogan and Torrey Smith.
New Orleans Saints
The Saints added the Center they needed in Erik McCoy and helped themselves in the secondary. Much of their success this year will be predicated on how well last year’s first-round pick, DE Marcus Davenport, does considering they gave up picks in this year’s draft to get him.
TE Alize Mack—The best Mack can hope for is to show well in training camp and have the team cut TE3 Dan Arnold. More likely, Mack will find himself on the practice squad.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
New head coach Bruce Arians has come to Tampa with the hopes of making QB Jameis Winston the player he was expected to be when he was drafted years ago. The Bucs added star LB Devin White in the first round, but on the offensive side, the team stayed status quo and Arians will have to work with the pieces he has.
K Matt Gay—Tampa still hasn’t recovered from the Roberto Aguayo disaster, but Gay comes to the team with a strong leg and a good chance to win the starting job out of training camp.
WR Scott Miller—With Adam Humphries gone, the Bucs need a slot WR. Enter Miller who was a second-team All-MAC selection last season. He’s only 5’9″ and 175 lbs. but he’s super quick and has excellent hands. He could be a sneaky last round pick in dynasty formats.
