Week 4: Fantasy Football Sit ‘Em Plays

Senior Fantasy Football Expert Adam Ronis looks at some players who you may want to think twice about before plugging into your Week 4 lineups.

These players don’t have to be benched. Each individual team is different and league context matters. The matchups are more difficult than usual and if possible, seeking a better start is recommended.

QB Carson Wentz @TEN

Wentz made his return last week and finished outside the Top 20 quarterbacks. The offense isn’t at full strength and lacking quality wide receivers. Wentz went 25 of 37 for 255 yards with a touchdown, one interception, a lost fumble and rushed for ten yards on three carries and was sacked five times at home against the Colts. The Eagles go on the road to face the Titans, who have allowed 16.7 points per game.  The Titans have allowed four passing touchdowns in three games.

RB Jamaal Williams vs. BUF

It’s difficult to trust any Packers running back. Aaron Jones returned from suspension last week and Williams played 30 snaps, Ty Montgomery 20 and Jones 17. Williams couldn’t separate the first two weeks in difficult matchups against the Bears and Vikings. Last week, Williams had five carries for 29 yards and two catches for 16 yards. Jones showed some explosiveness with six carries for 42 yards. Right now, all of the running backs are dicey plays with a low floor.

RB Peyton Barber @CHI

As good as the Buccaneers offense has been, Barber hasn’t capitalized. Even with rookie Ronald Jones inactive the first three games, Barber has been quiet. The Buccaneers have moved the ball consistently and at some point, Barber is likely to finish off a drive with a touchdown. Don’t expect it this week against the Bears, who have allowed the fewest Fantasy points to running backs. They haven’t allowed a running back to score a rushing touchdown and allowed 11 receptions for 84 yards with a touchdown.  Running backs have 53 carries for 152 yards, although it came against the Packers, Seahawks and Cardinals. Barber has 43 carries for 124 yards and one catch for seven yards.

WR Marquise Goodwin @LAC

The 49ers offense takes a hit with Jimmy Garoppolo out for the season and C.J. Beathard taking over. Beathard throws more to the running backs and struggles to get the ball to the wide receivers. When Goodwin played with Beathard last season, he caught 12 of 30 targets and while they did go for 328 yards and a touchdown, many were off target. Goodwin should also see a lot of cornerback Casey Hayward, making things more difficult.

WR Larry Fitzgerald vs. SEA

Fitzgerald played last week after suffering a hamstring injury the week before. Josh Rosen will start at quarterback for the Cardinals after replacing Sam Bradford in the final minutes of the game against the Bears last week. Rosen had seven pass attempts and targeted Fitzgerald once. Fitzgerald had two targets last week and caught both for nine yards. He had three catches for 28 yards on five targets the week before. The Cardinals offense has been one of the worst in the NFL and their not running many plays and Fitzgerald is dependent on volume and is a big risk in non-PPR.

TE George Kittle @LAC

It’s possible the connection with C.J. Beathard gets better this season. The two were teammates at Iowa, but they didn’t do much when they played together last season. They played five games last season and Kittle caught 11 passes for 103 yards. The Chargers have allowed the third fewest Fantasy points to tight ends, but they faced the Bills and Rams to bolster the numbers. They did shut down Travis Kelce, though, limiting him to one catch for six yards in Week 1.
