The 2022 NFL Draft is now just days away and the anticipation is growing. Trying to project this draft might be a futile project but it is always fun to break down prospects and predict their landing spots. It also is a good way to help stay on top of fantasy and dynasty football news.

After posting Jody Smith’s 2022 NFL Mock Draft 1.0, here is my attempt at forecasting Round One.

1. Jacksonville Jaguars – Aiden Hutchinson (DE) – Many fell in love with Walker after the combine, but Hutchinson is simply the better player and needs to be the top guy off the board if the Jags go with a defensive end as I expect them to.

2. Detroit Lions – Travon Walker (DE) – I don’t love the pick her but the NFL loves upside. Walker is off the board at No. 2.

3. Houston Texans – Ahmad Gardner (CB) – The Texans need everything and Sauce is the best player in this draft. They need to go best available and they do here.

4. New York Jets – Kayvon Thibodeaux (EDGE) – With Gardner off the board to the Texans, Thibodeaux is the no-brainer choice here being that I can’t see them going O-line.

5. New York Giants …

Jeremy Ruckert (TE) Ohio State

College Production

Ruckert was the No. 1 tight end recruit in the country coming out of high school and clearly made the wrong choice of which college to attend. Despite getting playing time being the starting tight end for the majority of his time at OSU, he was criminally underutilized thanks to the offensive system. During his four years, he caught just 54 passes for 615 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was little more than a big body in the red zone with last year being his best statistical season catching 26 passes for 309 yards and three TDs. At a school that used their TE as a true receiving threat, he has the talent to blow these numbers out of the water.

Strengths

  • Ideal frame and build.
  • Excellent catch radius.

Tyler Allgeier (RB) BYU

College Production

Allgeier didn’t get much work his first two seasons but burst onto the scene in 2020. He rushed for 1,103 yards and 13 touchdowns on an impressive 7.5 yards per carry and added 14 receptions for 174 yards through the air. Those numbers only got better in 2021 as he rushed for 1,601 yards and a whopping 23 TDs. His yardage total was good for fourth in the country and nobody scored more TDs. He topped off his college career by winning the Offensive MVP in the Independence Bowl rushing for 192 yards and three TDs.

Strengths

  • Tough to stop on the goal line.
  • Understands zone scheme.

Jalen Tolbert (WR) South Alabama

College Production

The first real signs of Tolbert’s potential flashed during his sophomore season in 2019. During his sophomore campaign, he caught 27 passes for 521 yards and a team-high six receiving touchdowns. Then as a junior, he fully broke out catching 64 passes for 1,085 yards and eight touchdowns. This was enough to earn him first-team All-Sun Belt honors.

While first-team All-Sun Belt is nice, in 2021 he upped his game and was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year. He caught a school record of 82 receptions for 1,474 yards. His eight TDs was also a South Alabama record. He also set career records for the school with 178 receptions and 3,140 yards.

Strengths

  • Tough to slow down with press coverage.
  • Plays well against physical corners.
  • Performed best against toughest opponents.
  • Good height and length.

James Cook (RB) Georgia

James is the brother of Minnesota Vikings’ star Dalvin Cook and was a superstar in high school coming out of Miami. He saw a limited role in his first three seasons, however, he never failed to top six yards per carry in any season. In 2021, he got his chance to shine on his way to a National Championship. He saw 113 carries which he took for 728 yards and seven TDs. Through the air, he tacked on an additional 27 receptions for 284 yards and four TDs.

Sam Howell (QB) North Carolina

Howell came onto the scene in 2019 as a freshman and looked good.  In his first season, he completed over 61 percent of his passes for 3,641 yards, 39 touchdowns (one rushing), and seven interceptions. This earned him ACC Rookie of the Year honors. He followed an outstanding 2019 with another great season 2020. As a sophomore, he threw for 3,586, 30 TDs, and seven interceptions in a Covid shortened season while completing over 68 percent of his passes.

All he had to do to lock himself in at the top of the 2022 NFL Draft was continue to develop and not fall off a cliff. He did not continue to develop and fell off a cliff in 2021. Fortunately, his numbers are better than his film but that won’t stop him from falling out the first round of the draft. He threw for 3,056 yards, 24 TDs, and nine interceptions while completing 62.5 percent of his passes. He also began to run a lot more rushing for 828 yards and eleven TDs. While this was effective at UNC with his lack of speed and quickness it likely won’t translate to the NFL.

Strengths

  • Good zip on the ball.
  • Competitive gamer.
  • Confident passer.
  • More athletic than…

John Metchie (WR) Alabama

Metchie got his first real opportunity at Alabama when Jaylen Waddle went down in 2020. He stepped into his role to start 11 games and caught 55 passes for 916 yards and six touchdowns. In 2021, his role expanded as he caught a team-high 96 passes for 1,142 yards and eight TDs. This was enough to get him named second-team All-SEC. Unfortunately, in the SEC Championship, he tore his ACL which of course forced him to miss the playoffs and offseason activities. He appeared to be locked in as a first-rounder before the injury now it looks like he will slip to Day 2.

Brian Robinson Jr.

Like most Alabama running backs, Robinson was buried on the depth chart for years before he got his shot to shine. He didn’t start seeing a significant role until 2020 when he backed up Najee Harris and had 91 carries for 483 yards and six TDs. Once Harris was drafted to the Steelers the torch was passed to Robinson as the next stud RB of the Crimson Tide.

Robinson was named First-Team All-SEC in 2021. He carried the ball 271 times for 1,343 yards and 14 touchdowns. Through the air, he added 35 receptions for 296 yards and two more TDs. To top off his season he was also named Offensive MVP of the Cotton Bowl against Cincinnati.

Kevin Harris (RB) South Carolina

College Production

We have a limited sample size with Harris being that he didn’t play much as a freshman and last season he was limited due to a back injury. He was still productive those seasons we just didn’t get much. As a freshman, he saw 21 carries for 179 yards and four touchdowns while adding three catches for 26 yards. Last season, he only carried the ball 152 times but still led the team with 660 yards and four TDs. He also caught 11 passes for 89 yards.

However, in a Covid shortened 2020 he was good enough to make Second-Team All-SEC. In 10 games, he rushed for 1,138 yards and 15 TDs on just 185 carries while tacking on 21 receptions for 156 yards and a TD in the passing attack. This is what NFL teams will be looking for when his name is called during the draft.

Strengths

  • Ideal short-yardage banger.
  • Is a force between the tackles and finishes off defenders.
  • Is tough to bring down once he gets going.
  • Good vision, finds holes, and
