Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill

Getting value on players is one of the key aspects to a successful draft. There are times to reach for players you believe in, but in the early rounds it’s not wise. These five players can all be good this season, but based on the ADP of where they are being selected in drafts they are overvalued. Make sure you don’t overpay.

Overvalued Fantasy Football Options

QB Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles

Wentz is coming off a torn ACL and hasn’t been practicing. There’s a chance he could be ready for Week 1 and missing a game or two isn’t a big deal. The problem is the price to acquire him. He’s going as the fifth to seventh quarterback off the board in most drafts and with the position being deep, there’s no need to take him that high. Wentz had a touchdown rate if 7.5 percent last season and the league average was 4.23 percent.

WR Brandin Cooks, Los Angeles Rams

It’s difficult to see Cooks getting the volume he has in recent seasons. He has averaged 120 targets the last three seasons. In the Rams offense last season Cooper Kupp had 94 targets, Todd Gurley 87, Robert Woods 85 and Sammy Watkins had 70. Cooks should get more than Watkins, but the Rams will spread the ball around and Cooks goes the highest in drafts. I’d rather wait and Kupp.

RB Tevin Coleman, Atlanta Falcons

Coleman was more of a complementary back to Devonta Freeman, but he’s treated in drafts as he can be a starter every week. Steve Sarkisian didn’t use Coleman as well as Kyle Shanahan did. While Coleman scored eight touchdowns last season, six came in games Freeman missed. It’s dicey to start Coleman when Freeman is healthy. Coleman would be excellent if Freeman were to miss time, but he’s too costly to rely on that. For where Coleman is being drafted, he’s in your starting lineup.

WR Tyreek Hill, Kansas City Chiefs

This one pains me because I really like Hill and was heavily invested in him last year. He has elite speed and can take it to the end zone on any play, but there’s risk based on his price. Hill had 105 targets without competition at wide receiver and Travis Kelce had 122 targets. Sammy Watkins was added and he’s going to get targets and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Watkins gets more targets than Hill. Alex Smith was one of the best at throwing deep last season, yet everyone thinks Patrick Mahomes is an upgrade. Hill is not a red zone target and scored all eight touchdowns from outside 30 yards.

TE Evan Engram, New York Giants

Engram had 115 targets last season and a big part of the volume was the absence of Odell Beckham and Sterling Shepard. He played 11 games without Beckham and four without Beckham and Shepard and caught 64 passes for 722 yards and six touchdowns. While Engram is talented and is often used as a wide receiver, the volume is going to drop, especially with Saquon Barkley being an asset in the passing game. Tight end is a shallow position and it’s causing people to overvalue Engram, who had a 56 percent catch rate as a rookie. Engram is talented and won’t be a complete flop, but it’s difficult to envision him being worth his ADP.
