Fantasy Baseball News and Notes

There’s a pretty good chance that San Diego Padres OF Wil Myers is going to be placed on the DL by the team in the next 24-48 hours. Myers had been dealing with a back injury before yesterday’s game, but left Monday’s game with triceps soreness. It’s still early in the season, so it makes sense for the Padres to be extra cautious with their star player.

Astros 1B Yuli Gurriel was hopeful that he was going to be able to play as soon as his five game suspension was over this week, but it looks like the hand injury that he suffered this spring is still not fully healed. Gurriel was placed on the 10-day DL by the team and he will get a chance to have a few minor league at-bats before making his appearance with the Astros later this month.

Why can spring training stats be slightly overrated? Look at A’s 3B Matt Chapman. Chapman barely touched the ball in Arizona, but so far this season he has two home runs and five RBIS. I think he has a real chance to have 30 HR by season’s end.

Now might be your last chance to get Pirates SP Jameson Taillon before it’s too late. Taillon went 5 1/3 innings yesterday and had nine Ks. Remember, he dealt with testicular cancer last season before returning mid-year. He is fully healthy again and could be a top 10 NL starter as soon as this season.

If you took a shot on Indians SP Mike Clevinger, it just might pay off big time for you this season. Clevinger’s name was flying off the lips of high stakes players in Vegas at the end of March and it’s easy to see why. He is a great young arm who will have every chance to stick on one of the top rotations in baseball. Moreover, the team has a great bullpen and offense, so it’s conceivable that he could win 12-14 games even as a SP#4. Last night he threw 5 1/3 innings and had five Ks on 97 pitches. The Indians will be very happy with those numbers every fifth day.

DFS Plays

Pitchers:

  • Justin Verlander — Fuego Steve and I both agree that it’s imperative to start all pitchers against the Baltimore Orioles until further notice.
  • J.A. Happ — I know the CWS have hit well recently, but Happ has had success against them in the past.
  • Clayton Kershaw — I am going to fade him, but I can’t ever blame you for using him.
  • Jack Flaherty — My favorite cheap pitcher of the night

Stacks:

  • Astros (Mike Wright is wrong)
  • Nationals (I hate Teheran)
  • Rockies (which Tyson Ross will show up?)
  • Sneaky Stacks:
  • Braves (A.J. Cole could get lit up)
  • Angels (I love the Indians, but not Tomlin)

Visionary Plays:

  • Freddie Freeman: He is in a great spot tonight. I am locking him into all my lineups.
  • Marcell Ozuna: He will hit his fist HR of the year tonight.
