GREEN LIGHT
Chase Anderson (Brewers) vs. ARI, vs. NYM
Anderson will return from the DL after missing time with an illness. Anderson isn’t pitching as good as last season and the strikeouts are down, but he gets two struggling offenses.
Walker Buehler (Dodgers) vs. COL, vs. SD
Buehler has pitched well in five starts. He is 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP and a 34:9 K:BB ratio in 27 innings.
Trevor Cahill (A’s) vs. SEA, vs. ARI
Cahill returned from the DL Wednesday and had a respectable start considering he faced the Red Sox. Despite one strikeout, he allowed five hits and three runs in five innings. In five starts, he has a 2.79 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 28.6 percent strikeout rate and 6.3 percent walk rate.
Mike Foltynewicz (Braves) @PHI, @BOS
Foltynewicz has seen a big jump in his strikeout rate from 20.7 percent last season to 27.9 percent, but the walk rate has gone from 8.5 percent to 11.8 percent. He has a 2.87 ERA, but a 1.34 WHIP. Foltynewicz has pitched six innings one time in nine starts. The matchup against the Red Sox is the concern.
Kevin Gausman (Orioles) @CWS, @TB
After opening the season by allowing six runs in four innings, Gausman allowed three earned runs or fewer in seven consecutive starts. It ended Thursday against the Red Sox, one of the best offenses in baseball when he allowed six runs in 4.2 innings. Gausman has favorable matchups.
J.A. Happ (Blue Jays) vs. LAA, @PHI
Happ is 5-3 with a 4.15 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 30.7 percent strikeout rate and 6.1 percent walk rate. He has a 50 percent ground ball rate and a career best 12.2 percent swinging strike rate. He’s undervalued.
Miles Mikolas (Cardinals) vs. KC, @PIT
Mikolas is 5-0 with a 2.63 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 18 percent strikeout rate and 2.4 percent walk rate. He has a 51.3 percent ground ball rate, 23.8 percent fly ball rate and throws first-pitch strikes 70 percent of the time.
Nick Pivetta (Phillies) vs. ATL, vs. TOR
Pivetta has been one of the biggest surprises. He is 3-2 with a 3.72 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 28.2 percent strikeout rate and 5.9 percent walk rate. He has a 27.9 percent hard hit rate and an 11.4 percent swinging strike rate. He’s throwing strikes early in the count with a 68.6 percent first-pitch rate. The stats are more impressive considering he allowed six runs in one inning against the Nationals.
Jameson Taillon (Pirates) @CIN, vs. STL
Taillon has been inconsistent after a start that showed he might breakout. He had a finger injury and left his start early on May 11. He made his next start Wednesday and allowed five hits, two runs, three walks and struck out five in 5.2 innings against the Tigers. Outside of two bad starts, he has been good.
RED LIGHT
Andrew Cashner (Orioles) @CWS, @TB
While Cashner is getting more strikeouts, he has a 10.8 percent walk rate, 1.49 WHIP and allowed 11 home runs in 50.1 innings.
Bartolo Colon (Rangers) vs. NYY, vs. KC
It’s difficult to figure out Colon. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts, doesn’t walk anyone, but is prone to home runs. He has a 2.82 ERA and 0.84 WHIP, but he has a 42.3 percent hard hit rate, a lucky .204 BABIP and 86 percent strand rate.
Matt Harvey (Reds) vs. PIT, @COL
Harvey has made two starts for the Reds and pitched four innings in each as they build up his pitch count. He has seven strikeouts and no walks, but pitching in Coors Field could ruin his week.
Ian Kennedy (Royals) @STL, @TEX
Kennedy is prone to home runs and allowed 14 runs over ten innings in his last two starts against the Rays and Orioles, which are favorable matchups.
German Marquez (Rockies) @LAD, vs. CIN
Marquez is too inconsistent to count on. He has a 10.34 ERA in 15.2 innings at home and 2.25 on the road in 28 innings, but the Dodgers lineup is better with Justin Turner back.
Mike Tomlin (Indians) @CHC, vs. HOU
Are you going to trust a pitcher that has allowed 15 home runs in 31 innings?
Zach Wheeler (Mets) vs. MIA, @MIL
Wheeler has flashed at times, but has been hit hard, too. He has allowed 15 earned runs over 16 innings spanning his last three starts.
