Chicago Cubs
Pedro Strop improved his shutout run to seven innings with one hit, one walk, eight Ks, and four saves. Since the beginning of July, Strop has a 2.16 ERA over 16.2 innings with 16 Ks while converting nine of ten saves. Carl Edwards hasn’t allowed a run over his last 5.2 innings with three Ks. Steve Cishek extended his shutout streak to 10.1 innings with 13 Ks and six holds.
Chicago White Sox
One of the remaining closing options for the White Sox appears to be Xavier Cedeno after the trade of Luis Avilan. Cedeno looked sharp over his last six games (no runs over 5.2 innings with two hits, six Ks, and one save). Thyago Vieira struggled in two of his last five games (five runs, seven baserunners, and three home runs over five innings). Jace Fry has 56 Ks over 39.1 innings in 2018 with strength in his WHIP (1.02), but his ERA (4.12) still needs correction. Fry threw the ball great over his last five games (no runs over 4.2 innings with nine Ks and a save) to keep his hat in the ring for saves. Jace should be the best option on this roster going forward. Jeanmar Gomez has closing experience, but he did struggle in this season (5.11 ERA). Over his last 8.1 innings, Gomez has a 4.32 ERA and 1.44 WHIP.

Kansas City Royals
Wily Peralta hasn’t allowed a hit or run over his last three innings with four Ks and two saves. Peralta has yet to blow a save in eight tries. Tim Hill has a 1.23 ERA and 0.68 WHIP over his last 7.1 innings with seven Ks. Jake Newberry was called up from the minors over the weekend. Over 41 games in 2018, Newberry went 5-0 with a 1.63 ERA and 53 Ks over 49.2 innings while earning 15 saves in his 16 opportunities. Newberry is the future closer for the Royals. In his only appearance in the majors, Jake tossed 1.2 shutout innings with three Ks.
New York Yankees
Aroldis Chapman left his last game with a knee issue, that points to him landing on the DL. Chapman has 31 saves in 33 chances with an edge in Ks (84), ERA (1.55), and WHIP (1.04) over 47 innings in 2018. Dellin Betances has 0.69 ERA and 0.54 WHIP over his last 13 innings with two walks and 22 Ks, which is enough firepower to pitch in the 9th. David Robertson is battling a sore right shoulder. Zach Britton did pitch better over the last week (three shutout innings with two Ks).
Washington Nationals
The experiment of Koda Glover as the closer for Nationals is now on the back burner with Kelvin Herrera activated from the DL. Glover posted a 10.13 ERA over his last 2.2 innings with two Ks. Herrera pitched one clean inning with one K in his first game back on the roster. Kelvin is 17-for-19 on save conversions. Greg Holland continues to trend in the right direction (no runs over his last 5.1 innings with six Ks). His chance for saves may come in September if Herrera has set back.
