Mark Melancon Injured, But Is Any Backup Worth Adding?

San Francisco Giants closer Mark Melancon is injured and Adam Ronis discusses the options behind him on the depth chart. Is there a backup worth your attention?

Adam Ronis was talking about the Mark Melancon injury on the FullTime Fantasy Sports show yesterday. The San Francisco Giants closer is questionable for Opening Day and options behind him coming off the bench aren’t very appealing. Sam Dyson had a pretty good summer last year but his overall numbers are below average. He converted 14 of 17 save opportunities for the Giants last year so he’s likely first in line to close if Melancon is forced to missed time.

Ronis also pointed out here that Melancon said after his first appearance in Spring Training that something didn’t feel right in his arm. Melancon went under the knife in September to repair the pronator muscle in his right forearm. 2017 wasn’t kind to Melancon. Think back to 2016 when he was with the Nationals, he posted a 1.64 ERA and 0.90 WHIP to go along with 65 Ks in 71.1 IP. Not too shabby. Last year, he had a 4.50 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. A repeat of that performance in 2018 is not going to cut it and San Francisco will have to move on from Melancon sooner rather than later.
