Week 7 Prescription Notes

In a season where points have been flying off the board, Week 7 was very much an anomaly. If you put up over 150 points this week, you have a great chance to separate yourself from your competitors. It just goes to show that it is crucial to be deep at every position during the BYE week period.

— Chargers RB Melvin Gordon was downgraded on Saturday night to questionable and then listed as inactive early Sunday morning before the game in England. A lot of Fantasy owners got caught leaving Gordon in their lineups because they did not set their lineups in time. Until the NFL changes the start time for the England games, it is imperative for Fantasy owners to WAKE UP and make sure to check their lineups before game time. No one wants to lose a Fantasy championship because you were sleeping (literally).

— I knew that the Colts wanted to get RB Marlon Mack involved in their offense, but I could never have predicted his 159-yard outburst against the Bills. Mack looked terrific both running the ball and catching it too. So long as he is healthy, he is looking like a must-start moving forward.

— If the Browns don’t fire Hue Jackson in the offseason they are worse off than I thought. Why would you run a QB sneak with Baker Mayfield from the one-yard line when you have Nick Chubb, or you could have thrown it to David Njoku or Jarvis Landry? The Browns have lost too many close games this season; games they would have won with a better coach.

— Two things we learned from the Lions/Dolphins game: 1) RB Kerryon Johnson is that good, and 2) The Miami run defense is that bad. As for Johnson, he still loses goal-line carries to Blount, but it seems like he is gaining the confidence of the coaching staff and garnering more touches of the football.

— Before this week, I wasn’t sure if the Eagles were going to make a trade for a RB before the trade deadline, but I think after today’s game I am convinced that they will. Wendell Smallwood and Corey Clement rushed for 38 yards on 17 carries. (Perhaps the Bills will be more interested in trading McCoy now that he is injured?) If it weren’t for Wentz, Jeffery, and Ertz, the Eagles would have had no offense at all.

— Bears QB Mitch Trubisky is on the cusp of becoming a terrific starting Fantasy QB. The only thing holding him back is his inaccuracy. With a little more touch on his passes, he could be special. He already has a cannon for an arm and is one of the more mobile QBs in the league.

— Thankfully, the Jaguars pulled the plug on QB Blake Bortles and gave Cody Kessler a chance to play. Kessler acquitted himself nicely a few years back with the Browns before they threw him to the curb. He doesn’t have the biggest of arms, but he is way more accurate than Bortles, and at this point, the Jags need to make a change, or they will miss out on the playoffs.

— The player I was most wrong about this week was Jets WR Jermaine Kearse. I figured that the whole team would struggle against the Vikings defense, but zero catches for zero yards was unexpected. That said, the Jets seem to have found something in TE Chris Herndon. The Jets have never been known for throwing to their tight ends, but with Quincy Enunwa out for another two or three weeks, Herndon might be a sneaky source of Fantasy production.

— In the battle for the Saints WR2 position, it looks like the winner is going to be Tre’Quan Smith. I had expected Cameron Meredith to put up a fight, but he was non-existent in the passing game against the Ravens. If Smith is available in your league, you need to get him now.

— I am officially dropping every Redskins offensive player not named Adrian Peterson or Chris Thompson. Alex Smith refuses to throw the ball down the field and has neutered the Fantasy production of Jordan Reed, Paul Richardson, Josh Doctson, and Jamison Crowder.

— I think moving forward that the 49ers are going to turn to RB Raheem Mostert more and more. Matt Breida cannot seem to stay healthy, and Alfred Morris looks slow. Every time Mostert touches the ball something good happens. Stash him now and watch him flourish as the season moves forward.

— Sadly, Bengals QB Andy Dalton showed on Sunday night why it’s so hard to trust him as a QB1 in Fantasy. Whenever you think Dalton is going to have a great offensive game he always finds a way to let his owner down. Against the Chiefs, Dalton threw for only 148 yards and one TD. Using him most likely cost you the win. The good news is that Dalton gets the Buccaneers next week at home. The better news is that he will probably be low owned in DFS next week after this week’s disaster.
