Week 12 DFS: Tight End Report

Last week, the tight end position had a down week in scoring, leading to only eight players scoring over 10.00 fantasy points in PPR formats. Three of those tight ends (Josh Oliver – 14.70, Stone Smartt – 12.10, and Luke Schoonmaker – 10.30) were backup options on their teams. George Kittle (22.90) was the only difference-maker at tight end in Week 12. Travis Kelce (16.40) posted the second-best game. Here are the top five tight ends over 11 weeks ranked by scoring average:

Elite Options

Travis Kelce, KC (DK – $8,200/FD – $8,300)

The Chiefs struggled to get Kelce the ball over the past three weeks (6/58, 3/14, 7/44/1 on 22 combined targets), putting the brakes on his rising stock from Week 5 to Week 7 (31/370/2 on 33 targets). Last year, he had 13 catches for 63 yards and four touchdowns on 15 targets in two games vs. the Raiders. Kelce has a floor of nine targets in seven of his nine starts.

Las Vegas sits 11th in tight end fantasy defense (55/481/3 on 68 targets), with no player gaining more than 70 receiver yards (Tyler Conklin – 7/70). Their higher ranking is helped by a favorable tight end schedule (DEN – 7/56, BUF – 8/53/1, PIT – 3/41/1, LAC – 2/9, GB – 8/65, NE – 5/50, CHI – 1/16, DET – 9/62/1, NYG – 3/43, NYJ – 8/76, and MIA – 1/10). 

Based on his salary, Kelce should be considered an elite WR1 in the DFS market. He needs 30+ fantasy points to fill his salary bucket which requires a 7/100/2 type outcome. The decision is whether Kelce can match the top running backs and wide receivers in Week 12.

Trevor Lawrence (34.80 fantasy points) finished as the top quarterback in Week 11, moving him to 16th in quarterback scoring (189.10 FPPG) in four-point passing touchdown leagues. Brock Purdy (30.05) was the only other quarterback to score more than 30.00 fantasy points. Twelve QBs posted between 21.00 and 28.50 fantasy points. Over the past three weeks, C.J. Stroud and Dak Prescott were the highest two quarterbacks. Here are the top five players after 11 weeks in scoring average:

Top Tier Options

Josh Allen, BUF (DK – $8,100/FD – $9,200)

Allen continues to hold the top spot in quarterback scoring (290.85 fantasy points). But his ticket has come in only once (Week 8 – 33.30 fantasy points) over the past six weeks in the DFS market. The Bills played seven of their first 11 games at home (one matchup was overseas). He had more interceptions (6) than passing touchdowns (5) on the road. All three of his games with more than 30.00 fantasy points came at home.

Philadelphia ranks 29th vs. quarterbacks (22.99 FPPG), with failure in three matchups (MIN – 364/4, WAS – 408/4, and DAL – 388/3). Despite their struggles, the Eagles allow 6.6 yards per pass attempt while delivering 31 sacks. Wide receivers (166/1,922/15 on 266 targets) gained 200 yards in five different games (MIN – 17/265/2, WAS – 22/230/1, MIA – 20/206/1, WAS – 24/288/3, and DAL – 18/271/2). 

The Josh Allen/Stefon Diggs combination has a chance to shine in this game, as both players must play well to win on the road against a top team in the NFL. On the downside, Philly allowed only two touchdowns on the ground, with none going to a quarterback. Allen needs at least 32.00 fantasy points at DraftKings to pay off.

Jalen Hurts, PHI (DK – $8,300/FD – $8,800)

The Cowboys and Chiefs’ defenses held Hurts to 422 combined yards over the last two weeks, but he still delivered five touchdowns, thanks to his value in the run game (22/65/3). Other than Week 8 (319/4), Hurts has 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions over nine matchups. His yards per rush (3.5) are a career-low while being on pace to score 15 times in the run game. Hurts has yet to score over 30.00 fantasy points at home this year.

Three of the top four tight ends in Week 8 finished first, second, and third in Week 10. T.J. Hockenson posted an elite game (11/134/1), propelling him over Travis Kelce in year-long rankings. Trey McBride (8/131) took home the silver medal, followed by George Kittle (3/116/1). No other tight end scored more than 16.50 fantasy points. Top Tier Options

George Kittle, SF (DK – $6,400/FD – $7,000)

In two of Kittle’s three best games, he only had four targets in each matchup. The first score was driven by touchdowns (3/67/3), and the second came from hitting on a 66-yard touchdown (3/116/1), with two other catches gaining at least 20 yards. His best opportunity (11 targets) came in a chaser game in Week 8 (9/149). Over his last three games, Kittle averaged 21.17 fantasy points in DraftKings scoring.

Tampa Bay sits 22nd vs. tight ends (53/514/2 on 78 targets). Their two touchdowns allowed came over the last three weeks, with Dalton Schultz drilling them for 10 catches for 130 yards and one touchdown. One other team (MIN – 11/67) had double targets, and five more offenses posted at least five catches.

Kittle has a higher salary than his overall chances (5.2 targets per game) compared to the best tight ends in the game. His yards per catch (16.0) create an edge, and he scored 11 times over his last 20 starts. Kittle is trending higher, but his impact value requires more targets. I view him as more of an option in a 49ers’ passing stack.

Sam LaPorta, DET (DK – $5,800/FD – $6,700)

Over the first nine games, LaPorta has a definable trend in the DFS market. He scored four touchdowns over four matchups at home (5/63, 8/84/1, 3/47/2, and 8/57/1), leading to 18.28 fantasy points per game. Away from Detroit, LaPorta has yet to deliver a playable outcome (5/39, 4/56, 4/36, 6/52, and 4/40) despite having a floor of four catches. Over his nine starts, LaPorta averages 7.1 targets and 10.1 yards per catch.

Chicago struggled vs. tight ends in four contests (KC – 8/78/1, WAS – 12/105/1, LAC – 5/52/2, and NO – 10/65/2). They rank 27th in tight end defense (65/516/6 on 80 targets). Tight ends gain short yards per catch (7.9), which is overcome by a high catch rate (81.3).

Over the last three weeks (1,132 combined yards with 12 touchdowns), Dak Prescott has been the best quarterback in the NFL while posting 3rd (32.10), 2nd (32.10), and 1st (42.90) place finishes in four-point passing touchdown leagues. Thirteen quarterbacks scored at least 20.00 fantasy points in Week 10. Justin Herbert (32.65) had the second-highest quarterback score last week, followed by Sam Howell (28.30), Joshua Dobbs (27.80), and Geno Smith (27.75). Here are the top five quarterbacks by scoring average after 10 games:

Top Tier Options

Josh Allen, BUF (DK – $8,200/FD – $9,000)

The Bills desperately need a win to put their team back on a playoff track. Allen ranks second in quarterback scoring (264.60) while posting three winning days (39.70, 32.35, and 33.30 fantasy points) and two dismal showings (15.40 and 19.15 fantasy points). In Week 1, the Jets held him to 272 combined yards with one touchdown. Allen scored a rushing touchdown in seven of his last eight games despite trailing his previous path in attempts (48) and run yards (246). New York also held him to two short games (205/0 and 147/1) passing the ball in 2022. Allen did have success on the ground (9/86/2 and 10/47/1).

New York has the seventh-best defense against quarterbacks (16.43 FPPG) while facing BUF (272/1), DAL (269/2), KC (254/1), and PHI (327/2). They allow 5.8 yards per pass attempt, with quarterbacks tossing nine touchdowns. Their defense has 25 sacks (18 over their last five matchups).

Allen has the highest quarterback salary on the board this week, with Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes playing on Monday night. He has an against-the-grain feel, making him a lower percentage own in the DFS market…

Last week, six tight ends scored more than 20.00 fantasy points, led by Dalton Schultz (10/130/1). Cade Otton (24.00) finished second, followed by Cole Kmet (23.50). The best tight end over the past three weeks has been Taysom Hill (20.12 FPPG). Here are the top five players by scoring average after nine weeks in PPR formats:

Top Tier Options

Mark Andrews, BAL (DK – $6,900/FD – $7,300)

Even in a blowout game against the Seahawks, Andrews caught a season-high nine passes for 80 yards on 10 targets. He averaged 16.95 fantasy points in PPR formats over his last six starts, highlighted by two winning outputs (25.00 and 22.30). On the downside, Andrews averaged only 6.9 targets. His best game (5/80/2) came in Week 4 vs. the Browns.

Cleveland has the best tight end defense (19/155/2 on 28 targets). They held seven opponents to fewer than 6.00 fantasy points (CIN – 3/17, PIT – 1/2, TEN – 3/7, SF – 1/1, IND – 1/-6, SEA – 2/32, and ARI – 3/22). The Browns played well defensively in three games (3, 3, and 0 points allowed) while showing much more weakness on the road (88 points over three matchups). They have 26 sacks, requiring the tight end to help in pass protection on some plays.

The Ravens’ offense has been exceptional over their last three games (106 points), leading to 13 touchdowns and five field goals over 34 possessions. Baltimore runs the ball well, especially in scoring (15 touchdowns). Andrews will have some chances at the goal line, but he needs a wide open game to fill his salary bucket. Not ideal for his salary, but I can’t dismiss him. 

George Kittle, SF (DK – $6,1000/FD – $6,300)

A chaser game in Week 8 led to Kittle setting season-highs in catches (9), receiving yards (149), and targets (11), lifting him to sixth in tight end scoring (94.50 fantasy points). Over eight starts, he has been a losing investment in four matchups (3/19, 3/30, 1/9, and 1/1) while receiving 12 combined targets in those games. His best three days came at home (7/90, 3/67/3, and 9/149). The injury to Deebo Samuel bumped up his value over the two previous weeks.

The winning tickets in Week 9 were cashed by the DFS teams using a C.J. Stroud (46.50 fantasy points) and a Houston Texans’ receiving stack. He gained 480 yards with five touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Dak Prescott finished second in quarterback scoring (32.10), one notch higher than Week 8 despite the identical total in fantasy points. Joshua Dobbs (28.50) came off the bench to post the third-best output for the week. 10 quarterbacks scored at least 10 fantasy points. Lamar Jackson, BAL (DK – $8,000/FD – $8,300)

The top end of the quarterback pool in Week 10 is weaker due to Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes, and Tua Tagovailoa being on a bye week. In addition, Josh Allen plays on Monday night. Jackson has the highest salary on the main slate on Sunday while ranking seventh in quarterback scoring. He comes off two dull games (13.55 and 14.35) in fantasy points, coming after an explosive showing (393/4) vs. the Lions at home in Week 7. In his first matchup vs. the Browns, Jackson had four scores while gaining 213 combined yards. He attempted only 19 passes due to Baltimore playing from the lead and Cleveland starting rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson at quarterback. 

The Browns have the second-best quarterback defense (15.09 FPPG), right behind Baltimore’s defense (13.73 FPPG). The Ravens (31.80 fantasy points) and Colts (34.15 fantasy points) had the most success due to scoring four rushing touchdowns by their quarterbacks. Cleveland allows 6.3 yards per pass attempt with 26 sacks. Indy was the only team to pass for more than 300 yards due to a broken play by Michael Pittman (75-yard TD) and blown coverage vs. Josh Downs (59-yard TD) on another play.

This matchup should have a lot of running, pointing to a lower-scoring game (game total – 38.5). The Ravens scored 13 touchdowns and kicked five field goals over their last 34 possessions. That was highlighted by two explosive wins at home (38-6 and 37-3). Over this span, they scored eight rushing touchdowns. Jackson helps his floor by rushing the ball, but he is only an against-the-grain option in this matchup.

Justin Herbert, LAC (DK – $7,700/FD – $8,500)

The injury to Zach Ertz was a big win for Trey McBride investors in Week 8. He was the top-scoring tight end (25.50) in PPR formats while finishing with his best career game (10/95/1). George Kittle (23.90), Taysom Hill (22.90), and T.J. Hockenson (20.80) were the only other players to score more than 20.00 fantasy points. Mark Andrews, BAL (DK – $6,800/FD – $7,500)

With Travis Kelce off the main slate on Sunday, Andrews has the highest salary at tight end at DraftKings and FanDuel. His targets have been low in five (5, 5, 6, 6, and 5) of his six starts, leading to no game with impact catches (six in Week 5) or yards (high of 80 in Week 4). Andrews posted his best fantasy point games (25.00 and 22.30) when he scored twice in each matchup. In 2022, Baltimore gave him double-digit targets in five contests, leading to four winning days (9/104/1, 8/89/2, 8/89/1, and 7/106/1).

Seattle sits 12th in tight end defense (30/342/1), with the worst showing coming last week vs. the Browns (5/83/1). They played two teams with weakness at tight end (CAR – 3/34 and CIN – 2/9). The Seahawks’ defense struggled over their first three games (30, 31, and 27) in points allowed. Over the last four games, they allowed 50 combined points and only five touchdowns.

Andrews appears to be overpriced in the daily market in Week 9, suggesting he’s only in play if using him with Lamar Jackosn and hoping for a much higher-scoring game than expected. Ultimately, Seattle needs to jump out to a big lead to force the Ravens to attempt more passes.

Mid-Tier Options

Dallas Goedert, PHI (DK – $4,800/FD – $5,800)

Over the past month, Goedert has been an every-other-week player (8/117/1, 5/42, 5/77/1, and 4/36), with his best outcomes coming in odd weeks. The Eagles gave him seven targets or more in five of his last seven starts. Last year, he posted two dull games (2/22 and 3/67) vs. the Cowboys.

Last week, five quarterbacks scored more than 30.00 fantasy points, with Sam Howell (35.95) leading the way. Dak Prescott (32.10) and Joe Burrow (30.45) had correction games, lifting them to 14th and 20th in the quarterback rankings. Josh Allen (33.30) and Jalen Hurts (31.55) produced top-tier stats for the second consecutive week. Will Levis put his name on the fantasy map after an impact showing (249/4) in his first career NFL start. Here’s a look at the top five quarterbacks after eight weeks by scoring average in four-point passing touchdown leagues:

Top Tier Options

Jalen Hurts, PHI (DK – $8,000/FD – $9,000)

Over the last six games, Hurts averaged 331 combined yards with strength in his completion rate (67.7) and yards per pass attempt (7.9). His lacking area was passing touchdowns before gaining momentum in this area over his last two starts (2 and 4). He is on pace to gain 5,143 yards with 40 touchdowns. Last season, Hurts had a quiet game (182/2) at home vs. Dallas while sitting out his road matchup.

The Cowboys have the third-best quarterback defense (16.43 FPPG), with one team (SF – 252/4) having success. Their pass rush (18 sacks) hasn’t been imposing over the last five matchups (2, 2, 1, 1, and 2). But they’ve created 16 turnovers on the season, with five leading to touchdowns. Dallas started the year by facing four below-par offenses (NYG, NYJ, ARI, and NE). However, they somehow lost to the Cardinals.

Hurts rides only as high as A.J. Brown can take him. He has strength in his secondary receiving options and a high floor scoring rushing touchdowns, but their success scoring touchdowns (21 over 85 possessions – 24.7%) is below their path in 2022 (59 over 186 possessions – 31.7%). This matchup isn’t ideal, but Hurts has the offensive tools to shine in this against-the-grain matchup.

Top Tier Option

 

Travis Kelce, KC (DK – $8,400/FD – $9,000)

After a slow start to the season in yards (26, 69, 60, and 67), Kelce started to make bigger plays over the last two games (three catches of 20 yards or more, with two reaching the 40-yard mark). He scored more than 20.00 fantasy points in three consecutive games, highlighted by his production in Week 7 (12/179/1). Over the last three weeks, Kelce has 31 catches for 370 yards and two touchdowns on 33 targets (93.9% catch rate). In Week 6, he had nine catches for 124 yards on nine targets against the Broncos.

Denver ranks 28th defending tight ends (42/486/3 on 50 targets). Their biggest failures came against Washington (7/89/1), Chicago (10/111/2), and Kansas City (11/138). The Broncos’ pass defense allows 8.4 yards per pass attempt, with quarterbacks tossing 16 touchdowns over seven games.

Kelce has an insanely high salary, one that he reached in fantasy points once in 2023 (35.90) and twice in 2022 (33.50 and 35.50). He is the clear No. 1 receiving option for Kansas City (nine targets or more in five of six games). I can’t dismiss a pair of scores and an active role in catches and yards, but his price point requires more creative roster building with fewer outs shining at the backend of the player pool at other positions.

Week 8 DFS: Quarterback Report

The big dogs at quarterback were the winning plays in Week 7. Patrick Mahomes (39.10) edged out Lamar Jackson (38.45) in fantasy points in four-point passing touchdown leagues. Josh Allen (28.95) finished fourth, followed by Jalen Hurts (28.05). The best option was Gardner Minshew (34.15), thanks to two surprising touchdowns and a pair of long touchdowns. My go-to low-value guy was Tyrod Taylor (24.45), who ranked seventh for the week. The theme for the week was QB/TE hookups while offering different levels of investment at DraftKings:

  • Patrick Mahomes/Travis Kelce – 76.76 ($16,300 = 4.71 X)
  • Lamar Jackson/Mark Andrews – 60.75 ($13,300 = 4.67 X)
  • Tyrod Taylor/Darren Waller – 47.25 ($10,100 = 4.77 X)

The Giants combo could have been the best pairing if the elite options at running back and wide receiver delivered elite games.

Let’s break down this week’s field in the FullTime Fantasy Week 8 DFS: Quarterback Report.

 

Top-Tier Options

 

Patrick Mahomes (DK – $8,400/FD – $9,000)

A Trip to Bountiful (Denver) bodes well for Mahomes to have another elite game. He rates as the top quarterback in the land again in Week 8 after posting his best game (453/4) of the year, thanks to a season-high in catches of 20 yards or more (6), two of which reach the forty-yard mark (46 and 53). Mahomes has a floor of 39 pass attempts in five of his seven starts. Last year, he had two high-floor games (349/3 and 336/3) vs. the Broncos, but Mahomes failed to produce a winning outcome against them in Week 6 (337/1).

Denver has the third-worst defense against quarterbacks (23.64 FPPG), with Miami (375/5) and Chicago (360/4) posting impact games. They allow 8.4 yards per pass attempt, with four teams passing for at least 299 yards. The Broncos have tightened up their wide receiver defense over the last three matchups (NYJ – 6/87, KC – 9/103/1, and GB – 10/98/2), but tight ends produced winning stats in four games (7/89/1, 10/111/2, 7/81, and 11/138) this season.

The Chiefs’ defense has yet to allow more than three touchdowns or 21 points in a game this year, so the Broncos’ lack of offense may lead to more running back action in this matchup. I’m a fan of offenses trending up, especially when having a favorable matchup the following week. Mahomes should have a floor of 300 passing yards and three scores, but he needs a few more yards and a fourth score to fill his salary bucket. Rinse and repeat seems to be the story here. Keep an open mind about Jerick McKinnon (on the field for a season-high 37% of the Chiefs’ snaps in Week 7) possibly finding his way onto the winning ticket in this matchup.
