2019 Fantasy Football: Week 4 Preseason Recap

Fantasy Football Expert Mark Morales-Smith breaks down the biggest news and observations from the Week 4 preseason games.

Dwayne Haskins

Minnesota Vikings @ Buffalo Bills

Vikings

We saw De’Angelo Henderson and Ameer Abdullah make their case for a roster spot in this one. Henderson rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries adding an eight-yard reception. Abdullah was a bit more efficient carrying the ball five times for 21 yards and catching a 15-yard touchdown pass.

Bills

Backup quarterback Tyree Jackson was the star of the show for Buffalo. He completed 22 of 33 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown and rushed for an additional 78 yards and a TD. Tight end Jason Croom also got out on the field, which means he will likely be the team’s Week 1 starter at TE.

Indianapolis Colts @ Cincinnati Bengals

Colts

Now that Andrew Luck has retired we are looking at this team in whole other light. We saw the new QB2 Chad Kelly play a lot in this one. He completed 13 of his 16 attempts for 138 yards. Unfortunately, one of those three incompletions was an interception. Running back Aca’Cedric Ware outplayed Charcandrick West. Ware took seven carries for 44 yards while West managed just 22 yards on 14 carries. Parris Campbell was out on the field and grabbed three of his four targets for 42 yards. He looks primed to play Week 1.

Bengals

Cincy played almost nobody of relevance. We saw Jake Dolegala targeting Ventell Bryant and Cody Core most of the game. Bryant caught nine of 13 targets 83 yards and Core was targeted ten times, snatching five of them for 75 yards.

Philadelphia Eagles @ New York Jets

Eagles

This game was a nightmare for the Eagles’ offense. We saw Wendell Smallwood sputter to 23 yards on the ground and -1 yard threw the air with Josh Adams losing yards both on the ground and threw the air finishing with -6 yards from scrimmage. The team didn’t score and barely managed 100 total yards of offense.

Jets

The Jets weren’t much better on offense managing just six points. We saw Elijah McGuire fight for a roster spot but managed only 29 yards on 14 carries. He did catch all five of his targets for 35 yards though. Trenton Cannon who will likely make the team over McGuire carried the ball four times for 17 yards. Tight end Eric Tomlinson grabbed all five of his targets for 40 yards and may have made a push to catch some passes early in the season while Chris Herndon is suspended.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Carolina Panthers

Steelers

There wasn’t a ton to gain from this one. We saw Benny Snell really struggle on the ground taking eight carries for 12 yards. It wasn’t really on him though as he was being crushed in the backfield play after play as the Panthers line was dominating the Steelers backups upfront. Snell did go for 23 yards through the air on two receptions.

Panthers

Two potential handcuffs for Christian McCaffrey battled it out. Elijah Holyfield carried the ball eight times for 36 yards with an eight-yard catch. While Jordan Scarlett only managed 22 yards on 11 carries but caught three passes for 25 yards and a touchdown.

Atlanta Falcons @ Jacksonville Jaguars

Falcons

The Falcons had two stars in this one. Quarterback Danny Etling threw for 174 yards and a TD and rushed for another 67 yards. Running back Tony Brooks-James when nuts. He carried the ball 15 times for 137 yards and two TDs. These guys made the most of their final showcase before the NFL season starts.

Jaguars

We got a decent look at rookie Ryquell Armstead who is a popular handcuff to Leonard Fournette this year despite the signing of Alfred Blue. Armstead carried the ball six times for 40 yards. Elijah Hood also looked good rushing eight times for 71 yards making a case for a final roster spot.

3 Experts Promo

Detroit Lions @ Cleveland Browns

Lions

Josh Johnson threw for 157 yards and a touchdown. However, we don’t expect to see him on the field much this season, and the same can be said for almost everyone the Lions ran out there tonight.

Browns

Running back Dontrell Hilliard got some run tonight. He has become relevant since the trading of Duke Johnson. He carried the ball 12 times for 65 yards. On top of that, he caught two passes for 13 yards and a touchdown. He is expected to serve as the pass-catching back now that Johnson is in Houston.

New York Giants @ New England Patriots

Giants

We got a brief look at rookie Daniel Jones. He was a perfect four of four for 47 yards before exiting this game. Paul Perkins and Wayne Gallman both made their mark on the ground. Perkins carried the ball 11 times for 54 yards and Gallman seven times for 29 yards adding 24 yards through the air. Golden Tate played in this one before he serves his suspension and caught two passes for 37 yards.

Patriots

Jarrett Stidham continued to light it up throwing for 225 yards, two TDs, and a pick and rushing for an additional 50 yards. More importantly, it was to whom he was throwing. We saw both Demaryius Thomas and Josh Gordon out there. Thomas caught seven of eight targets for 87 yards and two TDs, and Gordon caught two passes for 30 yards. Rookie Jakobi Meyers also caught a 28 yarder.

Baltimore Ravens @ Washington Redskins

Ravens

Kenneth Dixon was the name that stood out in this one as he was likely playing for his job or at least showcasing for a job elsewhere. He ran well carrying the ball 13 times for 66 yards.

Redskins

Washington got their first-round quarterback Dwayne Haskins some extra reps before handing him the clipboard next week. He completed 10 of his 17 attempts for 104 yards and a touchdown. He will likely be the starter much sooner rather than later.

Tennessee Titans @ Chicago Bears

Titans

Running back Dalyn Dawkins carried the load in this game and looked good doing it. He ran 13 times for 117 yards. And if I’m spotlighting him, you should know there wasn’t a ton of Fantasy insight gained in this one.

Bears

I hope you’re not expecting a lot more from the Bears as almost no one of interest played in this game at all. However, backup quarterback Tyler Bray put on a show for the fans. He completed 28 of 40 passes for 334 yards and a TD.

Dare OgunbowaleTampa Bay Buccaneers @ Dallas Cowboys

Buccaneers

The only player I wanted to see in this one was Dare Ogunbowale. The running back that will soon be surpassing Ronald Jones because he’s much better than Jones. Still, the rookie struggled in this one managing just nine yards on eight carries and catching two passes for 17 yards. Andre Ellington actually caught two passes for 34 yards but also struggled on the ground reaching nine yards as well on three carries.

Cowboys

The story in this one may have been who didn’t play. The Cowboys rested Tony Pollard, and he will be their Week 1 starter. Jerry Jones conceded after the game that Ezekiel Elliott is going to miss regular season games.

Kansas City Chiefs @ Green Bay Packers

Chiefs

We likely saw Carlos Hyde for the last time in a Chiefs jersey in this one. The fact that he played so much is not a good sign for him. He carried the ball eight times for 29 yards which is just 3.6 yards per carry.

Packers

Dexter Williams was the Packer to watch in this final preseason game. He got a good amount of work carrying the ball nine times for 34 yards and a touchdown. Williams also caught two passes for 30 yards. At some point this season he will look to push for the RB2 job despite negative reports out of Packers camp this summer.

Miami Dolphins @ New Orleans Saints

Dolphins

Mark Walton got the work at running back in this one. If Kenyan Drake is not healthy or traded this season, Walton could play a significant role. He carried the ball 12 times for 52 yards. Isiah Ford also made his final case for a roster spot catching three passes for 34 yards.

Saints

Taysom Hill continued his push to be the QB2 in New Orleans and the future behind Drew Brees. Hill threw for 100 yards completing 13 of 17 passes and rushed for 35 yards. Teddy Bridgewater threw for 83 yards and a TD completing nine of 13 passes and adding six yards on the ground. Bridgewater is currently the QB2 but is a low-upside veteran. Hill is an explosive young dual-threat weapon.

Los Angeles Rams @ Houston Texans

Rams

This was another game with very little Fantasy relevance. Justin Davis rushed for 78 yards, and a touchdown on 16 carries. WR KhaDarel Hodge caught five passes for 76 yards. That was about it for the Rams

Texans

Joe Webb quarterbacked this game going 19 of 29 for 163 yards with a TD and an interception adding 30 yards on the ground leading the team in both passing and rushing. Damarea Crockett got a shot to make his case for a prime role this year and didn’t look great. He carried the ball seven times for just 14 yards.

Arizona Cardinals @ Denver Broncos

Cardinals

Cards rookie wideouts KeeSean Johnson and Andy Isabella both played in this one. Neither was overly productive, though. However, it was good to see Ricky Seals-Jones be productive. He caught two passes for 43 yards including a 31-yard grab.

Broncos

Kevin Hogan played most of the game and is now the backup quarterback with Drew Lock injured. Hopefully Joe Flacco stays healthy because Hogan did not look good. He completed just 12 of 23 passes for 138 yards with a touchdown and two picks.

Jeff WilsonLos Angeles Chargers @ San Francisco 49ers

Chargers

Cardale Jones led the way at quarterback for the Bolts in this one. He went 10 of 16 for 149 yards and added a touchdown on the ground while totaling 26 rushing yards. Derrick Gore was the team’s leading rusher carrying the ball 12 times for 64 yards and a TD.

49ers

Jeff Wilson Jr made his case for a final roster spot, which may have opened with Jerick McKinnon’s most recent setback. Wilson carried the ball 20 times for 100 yards and a touchdown. He also caught an eight-yard pass.

Oakland Raiders @ Seattle Seahawks

Raiders

Much like last year, Nate Peterman continued his reign as a great preseason quarterback going 20 of 27 for 158 yards. Unfortunately, he is also the worst regular season quarterback of all time. Still, he likely beats out Mike Glennon for the backup job in Oakland.

Seahawks

CJ Prosise had a decent game rushing five times for 42 yards. He may be able to sneak onto this roster yet again. Wideout Jazz Ferguson, who has a shot at having a Fantasy impact early this season with all the injuries in Seattle, caught a 41-yard pass as well.
