James Cook (RB) Georgia

James is the brother of Minnesota Vikings’ star Dalvin Cook and was a superstar in high school coming out of Miami. He saw a limited role in his first three seasons, however, he never failed to top six yards per carry in any season. In 2021, he got his chance to shine on his way to a National Championship. He saw 113 carries which he took for 728 yards and seven TDs. Through the air, he tacked on an additional 27 receptions for 284 yards and four TDs.

Calvin Austin III (WR) Memphis

Attended Harding Academy in Memphis and stayed home and walked on the Tigers’ football and track teams. Played sparingly during redshirt freshman season (2018) before putting up a 17/315/3 line in nine games as a sophomore and earning All-American Second Team honors in track. Exploded onto the scene in 2020, catching 63 passes for 1,053 yards and 11 touchdowns and being named to the All-AAC First Team. Also led Memphis in receiving in his final season, with 74 grabs for 1,149 yards and 8 TDs and another All-AAC First Team appearance.

Sam Howell (QB) North Carolina

Howell came onto the scene in 2019 as a freshman and looked good.  In his first season, he completed over 61 percent of his passes for 3,641 yards, 39 touchdowns (one rushing), and seven interceptions. This earned him ACC Rookie of the Year honors. He followed an outstanding 2019 with another great season 2020. As a sophomore, he threw for 3,586, 30 TDs, and seven interceptions in a Covid shortened season while completing over 68 percent of his passes.

All he had to do to lock himself in at the top of the 2022 NFL Draft was continue to develop and not fall off a cliff. He did not continue to develop and fell off a cliff in 2021. Fortunately, his numbers are better than his film but that won’t stop him from falling out the first round of the draft. He threw for 3,056 yards, 24 TDs, and nine interceptions while completing 62.5 percent of his passes. He also began to run a lot more rushing for 828 yards and eleven TDs. While this was effective at UNC with his lack of speed and quickness it likely won’t translate to the NFL.

Strengths

John Metchie (WR) Alabama

Metchie got his first real opportunity at Alabama when Jaylen Waddle went down in 2020. He stepped into his role to start 11 games and caught 55 passes for 916 yards and six touchdowns. In 2021, his role expanded as he caught a team-high 96 passes for 1,142 yards and eight TDs. This was enough to get him named second-team All-SEC. Unfortunately, in the SEC Championship, he tore his ACL which of course forced him to miss the playoffs and offseason activities. He appeared to be locked in as a first-rounder before the injury now it looks like he will slip to Day 2.

Jalen Wydermyer (TE) Texas AM

Four-star recruit out of Dickinson High School (TX) after posting a solid 42/875/10 line as a senior. Elected to say in-state and committed to Texas A&M and earned playing time immediately as a true freshman after starter Baylor Cupp was injured. Went on to catch 32-of-44 targets for 447 yards and 6 touchdowns and was named to the All-SEC Freshman squad and Second-Team All-SEC. In 2020, snagged 46-of-69 passes for 506 yards (22.8% target share) and another 6 scores, again earned Second-Team All-SEC accolades and was named a John Mackey Award finalist. In final (junior) season, posted a 40/515/4 and was again named as a Mackey Award finalist. Aggies’ all-time tight end leader in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns.

Strengths

Brian Robinson Jr.

Like most Alabama running backs, Robinson was buried on the depth chart for years before he got his shot to shine. He didn’t start seeing a significant role until 2020 when he backed up Najee Harris and had 91 carries for 483 yards and six TDs. Once Harris was drafted to the Steelers the torch was passed to Robinson as the next stud RB of the Crimson Tide.

Robinson was named First-Team All-SEC in 2021. He carried the ball 271 times for 1,343 yards and 14 touchdowns. Through the air, he added 35 receptions for 296 yards and two more TDs. To top off his season he was also named Offensive MVP of the Cotton Bowl against Cincinnati.

Kevin Harris (RB) South Carolina

College Production

We have a limited sample size with Harris being that he didn’t play much as a freshman and last season he was limited due to a back injury. He was still productive those seasons we just didn’t get much. As a freshman, he saw 21 carries for 179 yards and four touchdowns while adding three catches for 26 yards. Last season, he only carried the ball 152 times but still led the team with 660 yards and four TDs. He also caught 11 passes for 89 yards.

However, in a Covid shortened 2020 he was good enough to make Second-Team All-SEC. In 10 games, he rushed for 1,138 yards and 15 TDs on just 185 carries while tacking on 21 receptions for 156 yards and a TD in the passing attack. This is what NFL teams will be looking for when his name is called during the draft.

Strengths

  • Ideal short-yardage banger.
  • Is a force between the tackles and finishes off defenders.
  • Is tough to bring down once he gets going.

Matt Corral (QB) Ole Miss

College Production

After being redshirted in 2018 and seeing limited snaps in 2019, Corral won the starting job heading into 2020. In a shortened 2020 season, he led the FBS in total offense and threw for 3,337 yards and 29 touchdowns in just 10 games. He added another 506 yards and four TDs with his legs. This was enough to make him a Manning Award Finalist.

In 2021, Corral stepped up to the point that he will likely be the first quarterback taken in the 2022 NFL Draft. He tossed for 3,349 yards, 20 TDs, and rushed for another 614 yards and 11 TDs. He made Second-Team All-SEC and finished seventh in the Heisman voting.

McBride has shown vast improvement every year of his college career, but he absolutely went off in 2021 becoming the focal point of the Colorado passing attack. He caught 90 passes last season for 1,121 yards which were enough to win him the John Mackey Award as the best tight end in the country. Oddly though despite this massive season he only caught one touchdown pass after catching four in 2020 in just four games. I’m chalking this up as just an outlier stat as the team’s offense was one of the worst in the FBS ranking 129 of 130 in total offense and only scored a total of 22 TDs all season.

Strengths

  • Has enough speed to stretch the field.

Jerome Ford (RB) Cincinnati

Ford started his college career in Alabama where he was redshirted in 2018, however, due to being buried on the depth chart he transferred to the Bearcats and began to contribute as a backup in 2020. In just 10 games he rushed for 483 yards on 6.6 yards per carry and chipped in another 51 yards through the air while running in eight touchdowns.

He took over the starting job in 2021 and showed off his explosive skill setting a school record with 19 touchdowns. He handled 215 carries and rushed for 1,319 games. He topped off his college career by winning the AAC Championship Game MVP going for 187 yards and two TDs.
