The Curse of Apollo? No problem–broken in the Kentucky Derby. Two straight Triple Crown races on off tracks? No problem with scores in the Derby & Preakness. Justify drew the dreaded rail Tuesday and trainer Bob Baffert must have felt like the bad luck the that has hit the illustrious NY Mets pitching staff with crazy injuries somehow now extended to his prized colt’s chances:

“I never do like to draw the rail, but my horses seem to live in it,” he said Tuesday. “We have it; we can’t change it. We’ll deal with it.”

Now even though Justify drew the rail at Citi Field for the Belmont post draw, often seen as the kiss of death in starting positions, he is so talented he should have no issue honestly. As long as he gets out clean and doesn’t get bounced around or face serious traffic from the one hole, Justify has all the speed in the world to get to the front of this pack and clear them all early. Now, should he get boxed inside and get pinned and be forced to check and swing around other horses at some point, it can be a severe issue in the longest of the three Triple Crown races at 1 1/2 miles.

Also, history is also on his side as the #1 post has produced more champions (23) than any other position in the history of the Belmont Stakes. The #3 & #5 post have produced the second most winners–(15)–where this year Bravazo and moon-shot Restoring Hope will begin their quest to the winner’s circle.

Baffert is seeking his second Triple Crown victory in four years after accomplishing the feat back in 2015 with American Pharoah–ending a 37-year failure. Justify, and Bravazo are the only two horses that will have run in all three Triple Crown races. Bravazo was sixth in the Derby and closed with a strong late charge down the lane to only finish a half-length behind Justify in the Preakness.

For all the NFL fans, there is a newcomer to the scene in the form of Gronkowski–yes he owned by Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots. The British based (12/1) colt will be making his US debut in perhaps the most grueling of races the Belmont Stakes and its demanding length of a race.

Now, as we noted above–Justify has thrived on off tracks so far–winning on sloppy tracks. Well, Bob Baffert must have learned how to perfect the rain dance because the forecast for Elmont, New York on Saturday now has the Belmont field looking at rainy conditions with a 60% chance of steady rain in the late afternoon. We will update this further, later in the week with our full Vegas Whispers breakdown & analysis.
