Fantasy Football: Championship Week Sit ‘Em

Senior Fantasy Football Expert Adam Ronis pinpoints a few players you should consider benching at a time when your decisions will determine your league's outcome. Prepare for Championship Week!

These players don’t have to be benched. Each individual team is different and league context matters. The matchups are more difficult than usual and if possible, seeking a better start is recommended. This is the LAST week in most Fantasy Football leagues so it’s especially important to make the right start / sit moves.

Week 16 – Championship Week Sit ‘Em Players

QB Jameis Winston @DAL

Winston has struggled in difficult matchups and he gets another difficult spot this week on the road in Dallas. Winston passed for 213 yards with two touchdowns against the Saints in Week 14 and last week he had 157 passing yards with no touchdowns and an interception. The Cowboys have allowed 19 passing touchdowns and just 228.3 passing yards per game at home. The Cowboys also control the clock and limit the plays of the opposition.

RB Leonard Fournette @MIA

It’s difficult to rely on Fournette in such a big week. While the Dolphins have struggled against the run, the Jaguars offensive line is banged up and Cody Kessler has played poorly. The biggest issue for Fournette owners is the usage. Last week, Fournette had one carry in the second half as the team gave David Williams a look. Fournette has 25 carries for 82 yards with five catches for 23 yards the last two games. If you made it this far with Fournette, you might not have better options, but if you are in a shallow league and have better options, think about sitting Fournette.

RB Kenyan Drake vs. JAX

Frank Gore has been getting more touches than Drake almost every week and after Gore left with injury last week, Drake still didn’t take over. Instead, the Dolphins went to rookie Kalen Ballage and it could happen again against the Jaguars this week. Drake had one carry for six yards and three catches for 28 yards. Drake’s usage has been puzzling all season and last week shows there’s no way to rely on him in such a big week.

WR Sterling Shepard @IND

Odell Beckham might not play for the third consecutive game and if he does, Shepard still isn’t a good play. He had a chance to produce without Beckham and has failed. Shepard had nine targets last week and caught two passes for 37 yards against the Titans. In Week 14 against the Redskins, Shepard had two catches for 17 yards with a touchdown on six targets. The Colts allow the fifth fewest Fantasy points to wide receivers and limited a surging Amari Cooper to four catches for 32 yards last week. They have allowed one team in the last five games to top 100 yards for the wide receivers.

WR Chris Godwin @DAL

Just when it appeared Godwin was heading for a strong finish, he has flopped in playoff weeks. He didn’t have a catch on three targets last week in a difficult matchup against the Ravens. Godwin had ten targets in Week 14 and caught one pass for 13 yards against the Saints. DeSean Jackson could return this week and it will hurt Godwin. It’s another difficult matchup as the Cowboys have allowed third fewest Fantasy points to wide receivers.

TE Chris Herndon vs. GB

After the top tight ends, the rest of the group is closely ranked. Herndon has seen six targets the last two games since Sam Darnold returned. Darnold is looking for Robby Anderson more and Herndon has four catches for 67 yards the last two games. He hasn’t scored a touchdown since Week 8 and the Packers have allowed two touchdowns to tight ends.
