Fantasy Baseball: Week 14 Closer Depth Chart

Senior Expert Shawn Childs provides his weekly closer depth chart to help you win your Fantasy Baseball league!

Atlanta Braves

The Braves placed Arodys Vizcaino on the DL last week with a sore right shoulder. Vizcaino didn’t give up a run over his last ten innings with two walks and 13 Ks and eight saves. He’s 15-for-17 in save conversions. Dan Winkler lost his way over his last 6.1 innings (seven runs and three baserunners with six Ks) to take himself out of contention for saves. A.J. Minter pitched at a high-level over his last 11 games (1.74 ERA and 0.86 WHIP over 10.1 innings with no walks and 13 Ks). Minter is the top choice to get saves in Atlanta with Arodys on the DL, but his window may be short.

Chicago Cubs

Brandon Morrow should be activated from the DL over the next couple of days after missing time with a back issue. Carl Edwards is trending toward returning the majors after tossing in the bullpen over the weekend. Steve Cishek has a 2.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over nine innings in June with 12 Ks. Even with a closing job for ten days, Cishek didn’t have a save opportunity.

Kansas City Royals

The Royals turned to Wily Peralta in the 9th in their first save chance after the trade of closer Kelvin Herrera. Peralta was up to the task by tossing a shutout inning with a hit and two Ks. Since returning to the majors, Wily allowed one run over 3.2 innings with six baserunners, which includes four walks. His game was full of risk in the bullpen at AAA in 2018 (5.10 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 30 innings with 39 Ks). His fastball (97.0) gives him a chance to close while his command invites disaster risk. Brandon Maurer has been unimpressive over his three innings back in the majors (three runs and six baserunners). Kevin McCarthy didn’t give up a run or hit over his last five innings with two Ks. This bullpen is a complete mess and saves will be tough to come by in every dirty little corner.

Los Angeles Angels

Blake Parker returned from a tough three games (five runs, eight baserunners, and three home runs over 4.1 innings) to pitch two clean innings over the last week with three Ks and one save. Parker has two failed saves in 11 tries. His struggles this year come from six home runs allowed over 38 innings. The Angles gave Justin Anderson a successful save chance on June 21st, but he blew up in his next game (three runs, four baserunners, and one home run over two-thirds of an inning). Cam Bedrosian didn’t give up a run over his last 6.2 innings with three hits, four walks, and five Ks.

Miami Marlins

Kyle Barraclough has been the best arm in baseball over the last six weeks. He extended his hitless and scoreless streak to 11.2 innings with nine Ks and six saves. Since May 11th, batters only have one hit off of Barraclough over 18.2 innings with five walks and 12 Ks. Drew Steckenrider pitched at a high-level over his last 14.1 innings (no runs, seven hits, five walks, and 12 Ks) to fix his ERA (3.41) and WHIP (1.19). Brad Ziegler has a 0.71 ERA over his last 12.2 innings with ten Ks.

New York Mets

I don’t have a good feeling about Jeurys Familia going forward. He threw 3.2 shutout innings over his last three games with two hits, two walks, and four Ks. He battled his command on June 26th (14 strikes over 28 pitches), which may be a sign of his shoulder still being an issue. His velocity (96.7) on his fastball remains in a positive area. His last save came on May 28th. Familia has four blown saves in 18 chances. Anthony Swarzak pitched poorly since returning from the DL (5.73 ERA and 1.82 WHIP over 11 innings) while allowing five home runs. Robert Gsellman crushed Fantasy owners over the last week (nine runs, 11 baserunners, and two home runs over five innings).

San Francisco Giants

Over his last nine games, Sam Dyson has a 6.14 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in his 7.1 innings of work, but he did earn three saves in four tries. Dyson remains an option for saves in San Fran with Hunter Strickland out for six weeks. Mark Melancon gave up one run over his last 4.1 innings with two Ks, one save, and one blown saves in his last five games. Tony Watson has closing experience, and he’s pitching the best in the Giants’ bullpen. Watson improved his shutout streak to 12.1 innings with three hits, two walks, and 15 Ks.
