George Springer was a second-round pick in most drafts last year. He didn’t live up to those lofty expectations and fell to the third and fourth round of most drafts in 2019. The Astros outfielder is showing why he was going high last season.
Springer went 5-for-5 with five runs, two home runs and five RBIs in a 15-5 win over the Rangers. He led off with a homer, the fifth time he has done it this season. He has a line of .321/.400/.660 with 35 runs, 15 home runs, 37 RBIs and four stolen bases.
Collin McHugh was moved to the bullpen and Corbin Martin was called up to make his debut Sunday against the Rangers. He allowed two runs on three hits and struck out nine in 5.1 innings. He will pitch against the Red Sox in Fenway Park in his next start.
Astros third baseman Alex Bregman went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs. He has 12 home runs and 31 RBIs.
The Astros placed second baseman Jose Altuve on the IL with a left hamstring injury. Altuve has a slash line of .243/.329/.472 with nine home runs, 21 RBIs and one stolen base. Aledmys Diaz will see more time.
Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu took a no-hitter into the eighth inning Sunday and lost it with one out on a double by Gerardo Parra. He threw eight scoreless innings and allowed one hit, one walk and struck out nine. He is 5-1 with a 1.72 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and a 54:3 K:BB ratio in 52.1 innings.
Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base Sunday. He has a line of .407/.486/.772 with 37 runs, 14 home runs, 38 RBIs and seven stolen bases. Teammate Corey Seager hit a grand slam and drove in five.
White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito is starting to turn things around. He was regarded as one of the top prospects but hasn’t had success in the majors. Over the last few starts, he is providing a glimpse of why he once was a top prospect. He pitched seven innings and allowed one run, four hits, walked one and struck out eight. He has a 3.55 ERA in seven starts.
Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs Sunday. He has five home runs in his last ten games. He has a 10-game hitting streak and has a line of .305/.368/.573.
The Cubs haven’t named a closer with Pedro Strop out with a hamstring injury, but Steve Cishek appears to be the leading candidate. He pitched a scoreless inning Sunday night for his second save of the season. He has a 2.84 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and a 21:8 K:BB ratio in 19 innings. He should be owned in all leagues.
Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant is finally heating up. He went 3-for-4 with his eighth homer Sunday.
Cubs pitcher Jon Lester allowed one unearned run on nine hits over 6.2 innings in a win over the Brewers. He walked one and struck out six. He has a 1.16 ERA and 1.11 WHIP and a 39:8 K:BB ratio in 38.2 innings. He’s a good sell high.
Twins DH Nelson Cruz injured his left wrist on a swing and miss Sunday and will go for an MRI Monday.
The Rays activated Austin Meadows from the IL Friday and he homered twice in three games. He is batting .360 with eight home runs and 22 RBIs.
Rays pitcher Blake Snell took a loss against the Yankees, but struck out 12 and allowed two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings. He has a 3.56 ERA and 0.98 WHIP.
Red Sox DH J.D. Martinez went 2-for-4 with two home runs.
Blue Jays pitcher Aaron Sanchez struck out 11 against the White Sox but allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings in a loss. He has a 3.75 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 46:27 K:BB ratio in 48 innings.
Paul Goldschmidt hadn’t homered since April 22 until the Cardinals first baseman went yard Sunday. He has ten home runs and 23 RBIs.
Luke Jackson has taken over as the Braves closer. He threw two scoreless innings Sunday to notch his fourth save and struck out two in a scoreless inning Friday for a save. He has a 2.25 ERA and 1.20 WHIP.
Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco came back earlier than anticipated from his shoulder injury and has rewarded his owners. Polanco went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and has a line of .317/.379/.533 with ten runs, two home runs and nine RBIs in 66 plate appearances.
Teammate Josh Bell has been one of the best values. He went 4-for-4 with a three-run homer and five RBIs. He has a line of .319/.389/.659 with 25 runs, ten home runs, and 34 RBIs.
Tigers closer Shane Greene pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up save No. 15, and he leads the A.L. in saves.
Martin Perez has transformed himself into a different pitcher this season, and he left Sunday after five innings. A line drive hit the Twins pitcher on the right leg. He three runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Indians closer Brad Hand pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 11th save. He has a 1.53 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and a 25:5 K:BB ratio in 17.2 innings hasn’t blown a save.
Giants closer Will Smith picked up his tenth save Sunday with a scoreless ninth and has a 2.87 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and a 17:4 K:BB ratio. He has yet to blow a save.
Reds pitcher Tyler Mahle took a no-decision against the Giants, allowing four runs with eight strikeouts in 6.1 innings. He has a 3.97 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 49:9 K:BB ratio in 45.1 innings and should be owned in 12-team leagues.
A’s first baseman Matt Olson hit his first homer of the year Sunday. He has missed most of the season with a broken hamate bone.
Orioles outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. has been an excellent waiver wire add. He went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer Sunday and has a line of .286/.333/.510 with eight home runs and 27 RBIs. One of the other few bright spots for the Orioles has been pitcher John Means. He allowed one run on four hits over six innings and walked three and struck out four. He has a 2.33 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and a 33:10 K:BB ratio in 38.2 innings.
Padres outfielder Franmil Reyes hit his 11th homer Sunday.
Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun missed two games over the weekend with a strained hamstring.
Pirates pitcher Chris Archer will come off the IL and start Wednesday.
Red Sox pitcher David Price could return this weekend against the Astros. He has been out with elbow tendonitis.
Braves pitcher Kevin Gausman dropped the appeal of his five-game suspension and started serving it Sunday. He will pitch Saturday against the Brewers.
